Called such by its discoverer Rollin Anderson, it contains the "A to Z of Minerals", and has been shown to greatly enhance the health and yield of fruit trees and crops. It also enhances the soil for grazing by animals. Quoted in the book Secrets of the Soil by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird, Anderson concluded this about his discovery: "We now know that Azomite aids the soil caused by mineral depletion or deficiency from continued use over long periods of time. Soil without humus is half alive, and without bacterial action humus is dead. |

Naturally, an increase in daily water intake and sea salt that contains other minerals will correct, this problem. The present way of dealing with hypertension is criminal. To give diuretics to a hypertensive who has adequate kidney function is absurd. The body is trying to retain its water by storing salt, and we say to the design of nature in us: "No, you do not understand, you must take diuretics and get rid of water. |

Experts believe that the best way to increase glutathione levels is to support the body's synthesis of it using alpha-lipoic acid (see page 177), vitamins C, E, B6, and riboflavin, and the minerals copper and selenium.
The most important thing you can do to maximize the antioxidants in your diet is to increase your intake of a variety of colorful, whole plant foods—especially vegetables and fruits. Recommended intakes are five to ten servings per day, although a range of eight servings or more seems to offer even greater benefits. |

Foods containing the minerals magnesium and potassium have been shown to have antidepressant effects. Purslane, which is very rich in these minerals, is also high in other constituents with antidepressant value, including calcium, folate (the naturally occurring form of folic acid) and lithium. In fact, purslane contains up to a whopping 16 percent antidepressant compounds, figured on a dry-weight basis.
Working with my database, it's clear that purslane is just one of several salad ingredients that might help relieve depression. |

Potassium, magnesium, and calcium are the vital minerals that balance the water volume inside the cells.
Additional information you need to remember is that five elements—water, salt, potassium, magnesium, and caicium—are involved in energy regulation inside the cells. Water drives the sodium potassium pump protein and manufactures hydroelectricity. This hydro-electricity is used for immediate needs, and the excess of it is converted to usable stored energy for emergency use. Calcium is bonded to other calcium in bones and in the endoplasmic reticulum inside the cells. |

Dried and powdered oyster shell has been used for many years as a supplementary source of calcium and has the advantage over many other supplementary sources of a limited content of other minerals due to its origin in mineral-rich seawater. The absorption of ionic calcium from oyster-shell powder, however, is no better than that from good dairy sources, and it is absorption that is the important factor.
A product reported to have the highest absorption rate is, however, another product of the seas—coral calcium. |

People on weight-loss programs, or those who do not have access to a balanced diet, should take these minerals in the form of supplements.
Iodine is a very important element for the regulation of the fluid content of the body. Iodine is essential for the thyroid gland to manufacture thyroxin, its primary hormone. It seems that thyroxin is the element that stimulates the cells to manufacture all the pump proteins that regulate the sodium, potassium, and other mineral balances outside and inside the cells, and that generate energy in the process. |
This condition should be treated with an increase in water intake and diet manipulation to provide the necessary minerals and amino acid balance for tissue repair—including brain tissue requirements.
It has been shown that the brain amino acid balance for tryptophan is affected in diabetic rats. There seems to be a much lower level of this amino acid in the brain when diabetes exists. Tryptophan in turn regulates the salt intake of the body. Salt is responsible for regulating water-volume content outside the cells of the body. |

Inside this rich topsoil is a complicated world of living organisms that help plants assimilate minerals from rock particles and other chemical compounds. Fungi, bacteria, earthworms, and insects are among the many forms of life that feed on humus. Thus these small life-forms slowly decompose plants left from the previous growing season, as well as animal carcasses and manure. They also aerate the soil so that gases can be exchanged and water absorbed. |

The salt should be unrefined sea salt that contains other vital minerals that are needed to hold on to the water once it is injected or diffused inside the cells.
When it is freely available, water diffuses quite rapidly through the cell membranes without needing to be forced. Its rate of diffusion through the cell membrane has been calculated to be 10'3 centimeters per second, which is fairly fast. This natural and fast diffusion process of water in the kidneys is the reason why water itself is a natural diuretic—far better than chemical diuretics or ACE inhibitors now used routinely. |

First, there will be a shortage of vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids. A diet which contains a variety of cereals, vegetables, fruit, and animal products is much more apt, even if only because of chance, to provide an adequate amount of these essential nutrients. For over 99 percent of man's existence on earth, there was no need to apply intelligence towards food selection. The only important fact was whether the food was poisonous or not. Among the foods found not to be poisonous, it was good enough to eat everything else provided there was an ample variety available. |

We can only benefit from the proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals in our foods if we are able to assimilate them into our systems. As a rather extreme example—but nevertheless indicative of the point being made—if we ate a perfectly balanced diet but all the foods were sealed tightly in plastic when we ate them, we would not assimilate any of the goodness of the diet as it would pass straight through undigested. Thus, we need to eat foods that are easily assimilated into our systems in order to benefit from their nutritive, and sometimes therapeutic, properties. |
Although the adverse effects of frequent, excessive alcohol consumption will not be reversed by the amount of taurine, minerals, and vitamins naturally present in a few capsules of a formulation containing the components referred to here, the unpleasant "morning after" or "hangover" syndrome that can follow even a moderate drinking session will be minimized. More important, however, will be the reduction in damage caused to the liver and brain cells by vitamin and mineral depletion and the long-term effects of this on the body. |
More importantly, the minerals are present at a level at which the body readily assimilates them because they originate in seawater dissolved at a balanced level. As with all nutrients, it is the amount that we assimilate, not necessarily the amount we consume, that is important.
Taurine is also an essential component of bile and the brain. Brain cell impairment and depression result from excessive alcohol consumption in several ways. |
In particular, the very important B-group vitamins and the minerals calcium, magnesium, and zinc are depleted by heavy alcohol consumption, exacerbating these and other conditions—osteoporosis for instance.
Avoidance of these unpleasant symptoms is, of course, possible by abstinence from alcohol consumption. However, it is possible to consume alcohol in moderation and still avoid or minimize all of the adverse effects described above. |
The shellfish extract could be the green-lipped mussel described in Chapter 3 because it contains the amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine, plus the long-chain fatty acids, and a natural balanced content of minerals. The fish oil could be one with the suitable level of omega-3 fatty acids blended with squalene. Squalene is a marine hydrocarbon with excellent antioxidant activity to reduce free-radical damage and also good oxygen-carrying capacity to help maintain healthy brain cell metabolism. |

Derived from plants, minerals, and substances such as coal tar, the dyes show detail not unlike the way a wood stain reveals the grain of an oak table-top. In the case of spongiform change, holes leap out once cells take up the dye.
Postmortems of CJD cases, however, are not de rigueur in the U.S. In fact, only about half of the suspected CJD cases are autopsied. Given sporadic CJD's one-in-a-million incidence and adding in familial forms, there should be a bit more than 300 CJD cases a year in the US. |

In the vicinity of native metals one often finds colored minerals, such as malachite, turquoise, and the deep-blue lapis lazuli. The next important discovery was that when heated in a charcoal fire, those minerals yield copper. These ores were much more abundant than native metals, and thus larger amounts of metals became available. The Egyptians exploited mines in the Sinai peninsula, and produced thousands of tons of copper during the predynastic period (about 3200 bc).
Bronze was the most important result of early attempts of rendering copper more resistant by adding different metals. |

V Horsetail (Equisetum, various species). The minerals selenium and silicon both help promote circulation to the scalp, and as a result, they help maintain hair, according to naturopathic physicians. Both minerals abound in horsetail. I'd try adding a teaspoon or so of dried horsetail to herbal teas, but you should check with a holistic practitioner before using this herb.

Enzymes containing these minerals help dispose of proteins damaged by oxidation that contribute to eye clouding. Catnip and the other mints contain both of these essential trace minerals.

Third World nations are arguing for conservation of undersea minerals until land-based minerals are consumed. They also fear that multinational corporations will tend to neglect Third World needs and reap windfall profits from the bountiful ocean floor.
Little is known about the sea bottom or its role in maintaining the planet's environment. Its sediment is rich in microscopic organisms and animal life. Mining companies admit that their hydraulic dredges and continuous line buckets will stir sediment and probably kill any plant or animal life in their path. |

Fruits and vegetables provide the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that prevent free radical damage to cells and support the repair mechanisms vital to cellular energy production. To get the most energy and nutrients, whenever possible choose fruits and vegetables that are grown locally, in season, and certified organic. Choose a variety of colors, too. The reason: Different colors suggest different nutritional compositions, and you want to be sure that you're getting the best mix of nutrients you can. |
The fact is, as hard as we may try, most of us don't get all of the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants we need from the foods we eat. Taking supplements can help ensure that our bodies get a full complement of essential nutrients.
Rather than advising our patients to down handfuls of pills every day, we offer the following basic supplement regimen. This is by no means a comprehensive list, just our top five picks—in addition to Rhodiola rosea, of course. |

Vitamins, minerals [1, 13] and low levels of volatile substances [5] also occur.
Indications: On the basis of its caffeine content, mate is used as a CNS stimulant for mental and physical fatigue, and also as a diuretic. Because mate tea enjoys such great popularity as a "national drink" throughout much of South America, primarily in Brazil [1, 4], numerous other popular uses have been ascribed to it. |
The drug also contains minerals, especially silicic acid, up to 2% in the soluble form [5] and, compared to other cereals, a high amount of iron (39 mg), manganese (8.5 mg) and zinc (19.2 mg/ 100 g), calculated on a dry weight basis. For other constituents, see [7].
Indications: In traditional medicine, green oat herb tea is used (similarly as the homeopathic mother tincture prepared from the fresh flowering aerial parts) as a sedative for nervous exhaustion, sleeplessness and so-called neurasthenia ("weakness of the nerves"). |
Other constituents include 35—45% starch and small amounts of proteins, sugars and minerals.
Indications: Extracts of the drug are used as stimulants against physical and mental fatigue (which corresponds with the German Commission E monograph); they are found in many preparations, primarily liquids, in the food category as refreshment beverages. Coca Cola® is probably the most well known product (it falls under food regulations as a soft drink). |
The drug contains up to 15% minerals, including up to about 3% total silicic acid (soluble and insoluble),
Regulatory status flavonoids (such as kaempferol- and quercedn glycosides) [2], allantoin (a glyoxyldiureide typical for Boraginaceae) as well as tannins (up to 4% catechins, up to 2% gallotannins [3]), chlorogenic-, rosmarinic acid [4] and ascorbic acid. The occurrence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (some of which are hepatotoxic) is suspected [5] but could not be detected by GC analysis of samples from different origins [6]. |
Other constituents include flavonol triglycosides [7], 20% proteins, 32—37% carbohydrates, and minerals.
The chemical nature of the constituents nigellone and nigellin has not yet been fully clarified. Nigellone has been described as a component of the essential oil, possibly a polymer of thymoquinone [8], while nigellin has been identified as an alkaloid. The drug contains traces of isoquinoline alkaloids such as nigellicine and nigeliimin-N-oxide [9, 10]. Traces of saponins, e.g. hederagen-in, among others [11], occur as well. |
