In a preliminary clinical trial on 53 patients of menorrhagia of varying aetiology, the seeds of Plantago major showed encouraging haemostatic results. The plant checked the bleeding in two to three days, when the seeds were given orally in doses of 3 g twice a day. Better results were obtained in inpatients than in outdoor patients. No toxic or untoward effects were observed. (ICMR. |
The biological value of the proteins of water chestnut was found to be higher than that of proteins in wheat (protein efficiency ratio at 7 % level: water chestnut 1.8, wheat 1.1).
The starch isolated from water chestnut flour consists of 15 % amylose and rest amylopectin.

They used daily aerobic exercise, stress heat, Bl vitamins and polyunsaturated oil, vitamins, and minerals. Thirteen other workers were followed as a control group. For those on the program, posttreat-ment levels of pcbs were reduced 42 percent in blood and 30 percent in fat tissue, and their symptoms had improved. Levels of pcbs in blood and fat remained elevated in the control group. Four months later the differences between the experimental group and controls remained. Serum levels of the pcbs did not elevate during treatment. This finding is consistent with previous work. |
Alan and I sat in the sauna (with heat around 130 degrees, also for mobilization); drank lots of water; and took herbs, vitamin C, minerals, and nutrients to help the detoxification enzymes, such as zinc, manganese, selenium, and N-acetyl-cysteine. Every hour we had a ten-minute break, then did more skin brushing. After the sauna we had naturopathic hot and cold therapy along with electro-physiotherapy to heighten liver excretion and immune functioning.
Colonics were performed at the end of the day to help eliminate the chemicals out of the body. |

Under the Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), the FDA issued a set of proposed regulations that created a separate category under which herbs would be regulated: as dietary supplements, which also includes vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, phytopharmaceuticals, and the like.
Dietary supplement products may make what are called "structure or function claims." That is, it may indicate that the product benefits a structure or function of the body, but it cannot claim to cure or mitigate any disease. |

Especially important for the enzymes of detoxification are vitamins A, C, E; carotene and related cartotenoids; bioflavonoids; and minerals such as selenium, copper, manganese, and sulfur (you can get sulfur from protein, onion, and garlic).
Avoid eating too many refined carbohydrates, such as breads and bakery goods made with white flour and sugar, candies, and colas. Sugar has been shown to lower P-450 enzyme action—a large superfamily of enzymes that are among the most well-known for detoxification. |

Vitamins, minerals, and other phytonutrients influence many cellular functions that are important in the induction and promotion of cancer, such as cell growth and cell differentiation, antioxidation, DNA synthesis, and cell membrane alterations. They protect against excessive oxidative stress, suppressing free-radical damage when cells are stressed by chemical or radiation-enhanced cell transformation. Protective systems affected by these antioxidants include enzyme induction (e.g. |

Vitae Elixxir also contains an unspecified amount of minerals. Schauss claims that it is "desirable" for patients to take various food supplements, one of which is "iron supplements with copper (if you do not eat meat)." Yet most experts believe that iron is contraindicated for cancer patients except in cases of frank anemia. In fact, scientists at Sloan-Kettering Institute and elsewhere have published over a dozen papers finking excess iron to lowered immunity and to cancer.
"Iron impairs several T-cell functions" they have written, impairing immunity. |

Over the past twenty-five years, intake of both artificial sweeteners and sugar has increased dramatically in America. Artificial sweetener consumption has jumped to about 25 pounds per year (up 5 pounds per person per year), and sugar intake has increased from 120 pounds to 140 pounds per person per year.
About 20 percent of calories in the typical American diet come from refined sugar. |

Depending on the patient, Nieper's protocol included drugs as well as vitamins, minerals, plant and animal extracts, diet, and lifestyle changes.
Dr. Nieper's approach looks beyond outward signs of illness to correct imbalances in his patients' vital life force. I believe that since such imbalances are always the underlying cause of illness, correcting them should always be the first order of business for health care practitioners. When the life force is in balance, it can do its work in sustaining the body's inherent instinct for self-preservation. Healing comes from within. |
Some of these vital functions include liver and kidney function; antioxidant functions within the blood and connective tissue; scavenging the stress hormone Cortisol in the blood; removal of waste products from connective tissue; transportation of many vital nutrients throughout the body, including vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids; detoxification of heavy metals and chemicals, and protection of cellular oxidation of such metals.
Albumin is also vital to the function of aldosterone, which regulates fluid balance within the cells and the entire body. |

It is taking longer for this problem to become an inherited miasm for the planet because these minerals have existed in minute degrees in people and in the water and atmosphere for thousands of years. Consequently, a tolerance has developed. This tolerance, however, is for elements that have traditionally existed in the water. The growing prevalence of these pollutants in the atmosphere is a key factor in this problem becoming an inherited miasm. |

During the eighteenth century the classification of plants and animals was still viewed as part of "natural history," a science that also included the study of minerals, for example. Plant and animal physiology belonged to physics. In the Encyclopedic, zoology, botany, and medicine were categorized as fields of physics and came under the general heading of "reason." The approach to physiology was consequently mechanistic.
Carolus Linnaeus began the modern system of classification of living organisms and introduced the binary notation system for naming species that is still in use today. |

Discuss with your physician the desirability of taking these minerals in supplementary form.
D) Cautionary Note: Those who take diuretics should be monitored by a physician and should supplement with potassium according to direction. Those with kidney failure should stay away from potassium-rich foods and potassium supplements, except as advised by their physicians. Those hypertensives who wish to try supplementary potassium to treat their blood pressure should do so under a physician's supervision.

Zinc deficiency is so common among hospital patients who are fed intravenously that hospitals are now adding zinc, along with other minerals, to the intravenous feeding solution.
Intriguing but still contradictory evidence related to zinc's possible role in cancer and cancer protection is slowly emerging. Zinc may be useful in promoting healing of gastric ulcers and can be useful in treating some forms of male infertility and sexual impotence. Reports of zinc's usefulness in some forms of diabetes and in relieving some of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are deserving of further study. |
One of the most fanciful ideas about silicon going around is that the body is capable of transmuting this element to other minerals, especially calcium. If ±is were true, consumption of horsetail would, in effect, turn us into something akin to nuclear weapons!
Juniper
(For Flatulence and Colic)
Juniper (Juniperus communis) has been used as a flavoring agent, food and folk remedy. The principal flavoring agent in gin comes from volatile oil in its berries. Oils and extracts of the herb are used in many foods and as a fragrance in soaps and perfumes. |
Nettle is rich in protein, minerals and vitamins, especially vitamin E (one of the richest sources of the vitamin) and some use it as a dietary supplement. It is a mild diuretic.
Adverse effects from drinking nettle tea have been reported including upset stomach, burning sensations in the skin, difficulty in urination and bloating.

This can be done by eating foods rich in these minerals and by taking a vitamin/mineral supplement.
Insoluble fiber increases bowel motility and may thus cause loose bowel movements, cramps, bloating and gas in some individuals. In fact, abdominal distress is not uncommon among those who make large, abrupt additions of fiber to their diets. Soluble fiber is less likely to cause loose bowel movements, but can cause bloating and a feeling of fullness (good for those wanting to lose weight). The best approach is to increase fiber intake gradually. |

Chinese men in Hong Kong for levels of zinc and other minerals. They found that levels of zinc in serum and diseased esophageal tissue from esophageal cancer patients were much lower than those in other cancer patients and in normal subjects. Zinc levels in hair were lower in both cancer groups than in normal subjects. The serum of esophageal cancer patients also contained slightly elevated copper levels and much lower iron levels than the serum of normal subjects. GyOrkey et al. |
In view of the important nutritional role of zinc and of its many interactions with other minerals involved in carcinogenesis, additional research is warranted to resolve the contradictory results.
IRON
Epidemiological Evidence
Iron deficiency has been associated with cancers of the upper alimentary tract including the esophagus and stomach. In epidemiological studies conducted in Sweden, iron deficiency was associated with Plummer-Vinson (Paterson-Kelly) syndrome, which in turn was associated with increased risk for cancer of the upper alimentary tract (Larsson et al., 1975; Wynder et^ al. |
In China, the Coordinating Group for Research on Etiology of Esophageal Cancer in North China (1975) and Yang (1980) reported that correlation analyses by county have shown an inverse association of esophageal cancer with the levels of molybdenum and a variety of other minerals in the soil. Molybdenum levels in hair were low in areas at high risk for this cancer. Low levels of molybdenum in the soil have also been observed in a region of Africa with high mortality rates from esophageal cancer (Burrell et al., 1966). |

At that point, manufacturers could market vitamins or minerals in any dose, but if labels claimed that the pills mitigated, treated, cured, or prevented diseases or symptoms, the FDA would consider the products to be drugs and insist that they be regulated as such.
BREACHING THE HEALTH-CLAIMS BARRIER: KELLOGG'S ALL-BRAN, 1984
If the FDA was adamant about health claims for supplements, it was even more insistent about health claims for foods. It applied the same logic: if food labels claimed benefits for disease prevention, manufacturers were marketing the foods as drugs. |

VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS
Clinical nutritionists generally agree that the majority of our vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and enzymes ought to come from a well-balanced diet that includes items from each of the four major food groups. However, this isn't always practical, which necessitates the use of food supplements occasionally.
From a number of health practitioners I've spoken with here and in Canada, they all felt that one of the very best line of supplements they've recommended without any hesitation was manufactured by a Vancouver, Canada vitamin company called Quest Vitamin Supplies Ltd. |
