In biology, the part of a plant that grows downward and holds the plant in place, absorbs water and minerals from the soil, and often stores food. The main root of a plant is called the primary root; others are called secondary roots. The hard tip is called the root cap; it protects the growing cells behind it. Root hairs increase the root's absorbing surface. sex cells The sperm and ova of living things. Sex cells have only half the number of chromosomes that other cells (body cells) have. (See meiosis. |

Typically, the chief minerals in spa water are sodium, calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate and sulfate. Many springs are actually radioactive, although not to the point that they are dangerous—unless you were to drink the water every day for months or years. The consensus is that the mild degree of radioactivity, like the mineral matter that so often gives spa water a disagreeable taste or strong odor, is part of the therapeutic essence of spa treatment.
The way in which a spa visitor interacts with the water is limited only by the imagination. |
The primacy of the bathtub flows naturally from the fact that mineral water, or mineralnaya voda, as they say, is considered the ultimate natural healing agent. The minerals in it—magnesium, calcium, sulfur and others—are valued in their own right. But so is the unique balance of constituents in the water of each spring, down to the last molecules, nearly.
The natural carbonation is also prized. |
One of those minerals is calcium and one of those molecules is oxalate, which combine to form calcium oxalate. Normally, calcium oxalate floats invisibly in the fluid, but when there's too much of it, or too little fluid, it starts to fall out of solution. Here or there a calcium oxalate crystal forms and attracts another and another, until there are enough to make a nice little stone snowball, with sharp edges to torment its owner, while defying almost every effort to get rid of it. |

Deionized water is water that has no minerals or contaminants in it. Ammonium hydroxide comes from decaying vegetable matter and is a by-product of human or animal wastes. This is a very common contaminant that makes soil very alkaline and water undrinkable. It has a distinctive odor and a foul taste, so creatures will not drink it. It does have the capability to break down cell walls in the digestive tract, but the odds of someone drinking a concentration high enough to do this are low. The key here is that the water is no longer usable when the ammonium hydroxide is present. |

These minerals help replace those that are lost in diarrhea, while the easily digested carbohydrates in bananas help keep the child's weight and energy levels normal.
There are some few cases of diarrhea in adults that are chronic and habitual, much like habitual constipation. In such cases, there is ample evidence that the bran regimen will do as much for diarrhea as it does for constipation. One study showed that patients having chronic diarrhea, with half a dozen or more bowel movements a day, were helped by adding bran to their diet even more than those suffering constipation. |
If you are sure that you are receiving an adequate amount of vitamins, minerals, iron and other foodstuffs, persistent fatigue then requires investigation by your doctor.
Palpitations (or an awareness of your heart beating) may be of no significance, but also may indicate heart disease. Following strenuous physical activity, or when scared, you may be aware of your heartbeat or hear your heart "pounding in your ears," but usually the beating of your heart goes unnoticed. When palpitations occur at other times, or when associated with any type of distress, a medical consultation is in order. |
Their roots are white and juicy and grow deep down into the soil where minerals are concentrated.
Keep in mind that the allantoin is concentrated in that part of the plant that is growing most rapidly. In winter and early spring, it's stored in the rhizome. As the plant grows, it moves up into the leaves, and eventually into the buds and young shoots. So, harvest some roots from your comfrey bed before spring growth. The leaves probably contain the most allantoin while they are still growing.
Run one or two fresh leaves through the juicer for use in an ointment. |

If turmeric is proved to do even half of what it appears to do, it will be considered an important medicine. First, it seems to halt the cancer process at all three stages: initiation, promotion, and progression.14 This occurs both in the test tube and in the body, a critical hurdle before a drug or herb can gain credibility as an anticancer agent. In the lab, rats pretreated with turmeric had far fewer tumors than their untreated counterparts when exposed to cancer-causing chemicals. |
The active components for cancer prevention include vitamins, minerals, fiber, plant sterols (e.g., flavonoids), and other hormonal compounds and antioxidants. There is no better example of the success of these recommendations than the Okinawans who in our nutrition studies get "Seven-a-Day" despite their low calorie intake and who, of course, have very low cancer rates. The take-home message? Eat more vegetables and fruits!

As a child, I'm supposed to know before reading the passage that chemistry has to do with minerals, water, and solutions, that numbers of people are concerned about the quality of life, that quality of life has something to do with water and solutions. Understanding that passage will be easy if I already know what "chemistry," "solution," and "declining quality of life" are supposed to signify.
But just consider the words of that last phrase one by one, "declining quality of life." They presuppose a whole realm of background knowledge that has no existence in the words themselves. |

Remarkable Plant
Alfalfa possesses deep feeder roots which burrow far into the earth, seeking out valuable minerals in the deep subsoil which are unavailable to other plants. Many instances are on record in which roots were found to have penetrated to depths of 38 feet, while even greater depths of 50 to 68 feet and over have been recorded.
This plant contains protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, choline, sodium, silicon, magnesium, and eight essential enzymes. It also provides vitamins A, D, B6, K, U, and P(rutin). |

HOW THE WATER CURE HEALED HIS LIVER!
After a short time, Mr. J. really began to like the blitz baths. Ten to 12 minutes weren't enough. He was willing to stay half an hour and he couldn't see why a little more wouldn't help him. He "went on the wagon," really watched his diet and made splendid progress.
In a few weeks, he was pronounced cured. |
But we are often ignorant of the fact that either sunshine or some artificial form of vitamin D is directly necessary to the best utilization of food minerals in the human body.
It is not strictly accurate to say that sunshine and vitamin D are identical. What is true is that sunshine, striking the skin, activates certain oils lying just beneath the surface, and the reaction of these oils produces vitamin D in the body. Vitamin D is also released in the system when fish liver oils or other foods containing it are eaten. |
To return to sunshine as food, the vitamin D activated under the skin by the sun's rays enables the body to retain and make use of calcium and phosphorus—the minerals essential to formation of sturdy bones, strong teeth and general good health.
Nature has not endowed any ordinary foods with sufficient amounts of this vitamin to be potent. Babies, who are unable to consume those few foods which do contain helpful amounts of vitamin D (egg yolk, butter, cream, cheese and certain sea foods), need the certain protection of fish liver oils. |

The earth's volcanic mixing would have produced minerals with a wide variety of current-handling abilities to start from. Most important, the piezoelectric, pyroelectric, photoelectric, and other responses of semiconducting crystals could have served as an analog method of processing and storing information about pressure, heat, and light. Moreover, repeated passage of current through some semiconductors permanently changes the materials' characteristics so as to make the same electrical responses easier in the future. |

Remedial Use of Kelp
Kelp contains an abundance of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. Because of its rich content of iodine, kelp is well-known in many lands as a remedy for preventing or treating goiter. However, some practitioners have reportedly found it to be helpful in normalizing a weak or enlarged prostate gland, and certain other male disorders. For example, Dr. Eric Powell of England says:
The action of kelp on the prostate is to improve the nutrition of the organ and the circulation of the blood through the tissues. |
Since we Americans know of celery's alkaline reaction in the body and of the valuable minerals (particularly sodium) which it contains in abundance, it is not to be wondered at that great benefit was derived from following such a diet.
That most Americans over-indulge in concentrated, acid-forming starches is generally conceded. This results in deposits of insoluble inorganic calcium. Food chemists have demonstrated that the organic sodium in celery helps keep the inorganic calcium in solution so at least some of it can be eliminated. |

Tiny amounts of certain minerals mixed into the semiconductor material could change its characteristics enormously. The making of semiconductors to order by selective doping would become a science in itself; to us it suggested trace elements in bone. We already knew that certain trace metals—such as copper, lead, silver, and beryllium—bonded readily to bone. Beryllium miners had a high rate of osteogenic sarcoma—bone cancer—because beryllium somehow removed normal controls from the osteocytes' growth potential. |

Constituents in Pollen
Scientific analyses have shown that honey bee pollen contains an abundance of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, coenzymes, fats, and hormone components, as well as having a very high protein and amino acid content. Two European universities termed pollen one of the richest food substances, saying that it is "without equal in nature."

It is believed by its enthusiasts that ginseng overcomes disease by building up general vitality and resistance, and especially by strengthening the endocrine glands, which control all basic physiological processes, including the metabolism of minerals and vitamins.
The life span of former Korean President Syngman Rhee, who died at the age of 90, was attributed by Koreans to his long use of ginseng. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek, the former leader of Nationalist China, was said to be a regular user of the long-life root. |

Honey also provides many valuable minerals, and, interestingly enough, the mineral content is higher in those darker honeys.
Among its many constituents, honey contains magnesium, the spark plug which starts the chain reaction which metabolizes food. It is one of the richest sources of rutin, the nutrient so useful in strengthening the capillaries (tiny blood vessels). It also contains an anti-hemorrhage factor believed to be vitamin K.
Honey is assimilated rapidly and easily, and it is very soothing to the delicate membranes of the digestive tract. |

It is an important element in the body's ability to remain in a state of balance, keeping your blood at a proper acidity, producing necessary histamines, removing excess toxic metals, and helping your kidneys maintain a healthy equilibrium of minerals. Zinc works in the protein production system, in blood cells, the circulatory system, and the nerves.
Eggs, poultry, and seafood contain sizable amounts of zinc, as do organ meats. Excellent vegetable sources include peas, soybeans, mushrooms, whole grains, most nuts, and seeds, especially pumpkin. |
