Manganese is necessary for proper nutrition, mainly because it has the effect of activating other minerals in the body. It is known as the fertility mineral, and the lack of sufficient manganese may cause an inability to produce offspring.
Result of deficiency. A lack of sufficient manganese may cause sterility, and generally results in poor functioning of body movements.
Availability. Manganese is found in fair quantities in whole grains, rice, nuts, bananas, leafy vegetables, beets, asparagus, celery, squash, parsley, spinach, lettuce, and sea vegetation such as kelp. |

The fungal mycorrhizae can quickly recycle these soluble minerals, and they can return almost twenty times as much phosphorus and potassium to the trees as is lost to the rains. The constant temperature and high humidity of the rain forest floor provides a perfect environment for fungi—one that allows particularly rapid growth. Fungi can invade new sources of fertility far more rapidly than a tree rootlet can, and this rapid capacity for growth and colonization lessens the loss of valuable nutrients from the forest ecosystem. |
But meat is more than a simple concentration of minerals; it also acts as a filter, a metabolic distillation that removes many
89 of the toxins that lurk in almost every plant. The ocelot and other carnivores may have opted for a life devoid of salads not only because plants are so watered down but also because they are so poisonous and costly to process.
Ever since the first arthropod raised its mouthparts from the decaying litter of ancient swamp forests and began to gnaw on green, a battle has been waged between plants and herbivores. Some of the armaments in this contest are obvious. |
Moreover, many tropical soils lack weatherable minerals like silicates, which are needed to build new soils. Tropical soils are often lateritic; they are poor soils, stained red with iron compounds that quickly lose their fertility and react with the sun and rain to bake as hard as pavement. Once these fragile soils are exposed, they die, and forest returns slowly if ever.
It is in the trees that the nutrient wealth of the rain forest resides. In the dimly lit understory of virgin rain forest few herbs or grasses can exist. |
There is no surplus of nutrients, no bank of minerals to rely on when the system is stressed. In a black prairie chernozem soil or the loam of a temperate forest, humus—the true organic fat of the land— builds up quickly and deepens with each passing year. This does not happen in many tropical forests. Nutrients crucial to plant growth may be leached away quickly and lost, or they may be trapped by the mycorrhizal mat and returned to the living forest. |

With the aid of the index, one can find which natural foods will provide the vitamins or minerals needed. The index is especially valuable when one wishes to ascertain just which foods contain some particular vitamin or mineral.
VITAMIN A
Value. This vitamin has a special relationship to the "lining cells" of the body, including the skin, eyes, urinary tract, bones, teeth, and the gastrointestinal tract (pertaining to the stomach and intestines). It is also known as an anti-infection vitamin, helping the body to fight off disease. |

As discussed, this also involves various minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and zinc. Sometimes these balancing forces are so altered that the excitatory cells are released from their inhibitory control, or even stimulated to fire excessively.
When this happens impulses are fired repetitively down the nerve fibers that are connected to these cells. This results in a seizure. The final effect of this abnormal firing of neurons depends on the function of the particular group of cells involved and on whether or not this focus of abnormal firing will spread to other areas of the brain. |
This is why humans must eat, to provide nutrients to replace these vital substances, including vitamins, minerals and trace elements.
The number of chemical reactions taking place in the nervous system at any given time number in the hundreds of thousands. Everything that is broken down in the brain, all of the transmitters generated, every energy reaction, all of the structural proteins and lipids, and the process of inter-conversions of substances to create other substances, occurs via complex biochemical reactions. |
They may be minerals, vitamins, or enzymes. Common examples include vitamin E, vitamin C, and beta-carotene.
Anterior horn cells: Special neurons found within the grey matter of the spinal cord that stimulate motor movement in the body.
Aspartate: An acidic amino acid used by the brain as a neurotransmitter. At higher doses it can injure or kill neurons and is then considered an excitotoxin.
ATP: Abbreviation for adenosine triphosphate, a high-energy compound that all cells in the body use for energy. It is generated by the metabolism of food. |

Also other ocean minerals, such as iodine, etc.
Reported health benefits: Kelp, either fresh or powdered, is the richest source of organic iodine. It helps correct mineral deficiencies and is a good protective food, valuable in overcoming poor digestion, preventing and overcoming goiter, and rebuilding and maintaining the proper function of all the glands. Kelp has been reported to be an aid in brain development; it offsets deficiencies of an inferior diet; it is beneficial for those suffering from impotency, anemia and emaciation. |

Today, a steer is born, taken from its mother, and put on a diet of powdered milk, synthetic vitamins, minerals, and antibiotics. Drugs in its food reduce its activities, thus saving on feed. Next it is actually allowed to eat pasture grass, though this is supplemented with processed feed, premixed with antibiotics and growth-promoting drugs. At six months, this animal weighs five hundred pounds and is ready for the feed lot. Here it is doused with pesticides and placed in a pen that is lit around the clock to alter natural sleep patterns and encourage continuous feeding. |

Fossils are formed when minerals in groundwater replace materials in bones and tissue, creating a replica in stone of the original organism. The study of fossils is the domain of paleontology. The oldest fossils (of mats of algae) are 3.5 billion years old. fa The term is used figuratively to refer to a person with very old-fashioned or outmoded viewpoints: "That old fossil of a disc jockey still thinks that the Beatles are a new group!" fossil fuels Coal, petroleum, and natural gas. fa All of these fuels were formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. |

A basic test will include such things as pH, hardness, alkalinity, minerals and salts, bacteria, total dissolved solids, and so forth. A more complicated test checks levels of lead and other metals, fluoride, and THMs. A still more complex test will show you the levels of organics and synthetic chemicals in your water.
Obtain a copy of your state drinking water standards (which are at least as strict as the federal ones and may include additional standards) from your public health department. If your water comes from a well, request tests for bacteria and nitrates. |

White bread and jam create a need for protein, fiber, and minerals; a potato chip and ice cream binge may be the attempt to meet that need.
In addition, the appetite is further confused by the increased use of chemical additives, whether they're made from petroleum or isolated from natural substances. Some foods that would normally be spoiled don't taste spoiled, others taste like what they're not, and some that are in fact harmful seem delicious. How's a body to know what to eat? |

The best kind to buy is distilled spring water, although it will have only trace amounts of the healthful minerals in it. And be prepared to spend 4 or 5 cents per glass— an expensive substitute, considering plain old tap water costs a fraction of a cent per glass.
Dealing with Common Contaminants
The following list will help you assess the risks involved if major contaminants are found in your water and will give you a good idea of measures you can take to get rid of them. |
Softeners do not remove minerals other than calcium, magnesium, and iron. Neither do they remove organic or bacterial contaminants.
It's not difficult to treat your water so that you have softened water for washing and bathing but not for drinking and cooking. Simply rig the drinking water tap to bypass the softener, or install a reverse osmosis device to remove the sodium.
Some public water utilities regularly report that softened water is more prone to lead contamination than hard water is. "That's not true," says Jerry Tone, president of National Testing Labs in Cleveland, Ohio. |

For 25 years he has researched the patterns of minerals, vitamins and blood proteins in a new way (Smith). Kitkoski researched and cured animal disease by balancing blood chemistry before he successfully applied his methods to humans. His organization, Life Balances in Spokane, Washington, has prepared physicians' manuals and training sessions to carry out their stunning procedures.
Both Kitkoski's models and mine exist to improve the body's ability to adapt—health—and to cure disease over time by removing the cause. This program is not fast, but it is sure. |

Carbon filters remove many objectionable tastes and odors, sediment, and most organic chemicals, but they are not effective against dissolved minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, nitrates, sulfates, or hydrogen sulfide (the chemical that gives water a rotten-egg taste and odor).
Carbon filters also cannot remove microorganisms from water. They can, in fact, allow bacteria levels to multiply many times over because the wet carbon and trapped organic material provide an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. |
Bacteria, minerals, and other substances are left behind as the water turns to steam. The steam is then recondensed into relatively pure water. Some contaminants, such as chloroform, boil at or below the boiling point of water and can vaporize and be recondensed right along with the water. Fractional distillers, however, are able to remedy the chloroform problem.
Distillation is a slow process with daily capacity usually between 2 and 5 gallons. Distillers are difficult to keep clean. The impurities left behind build up and eventually form a scale that can interfere with the unit's efficiency. |
If you have minerals in your water, you can buy a deminer-alization filter to remove unwanted particles. But no matter what kind you buy, make sure water doesn't sit in it for long and that it is cleaned daily with a cup of bleach per gallon of water. Then rinse the tank thoroughly with plain water before refilling.
Also, make sure the humidifier you select is the capacity you need. Most central humidifiers, which attach to the supply plenum of forced air systems, are more than adequate for the average house. Even the smallest units are capable of supplying up to a gallon of water per hour. |

Nutrients in Proportion
We have all been bombarded with countless articles, books, and lectures on the subject of vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and fats. These elements, which are given form by the morphogenetic field of the system to which they belong, have been the focus of nutritional study for the greater part of this century. Yet although information on recommended quantities of nutrients abounds, I have seen very few comments on something I consider much more important: the proportion in which these nutrients occur in food. |

Sources of universal electromagnetism exist at all levels of nature because chemicals, minerals and atoms are the same wherever they are found. When the tiny mass of an electron spins around the nucleus of an atom, a magnetic field is created by its spin. Even the center of the atom is said to contain a crystal in the magnetic domain. All living tissues contain magnetism from iron in the cells. Magnetic flow at the nerve synapses transports electrical signals down nerve routes. This natural magnetism inside the living tissue is directly influenced by the prevalent electromagnetism of gravity. |

As your muscles contract and relax, you utilize minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium.
The longer you exercise, the greater amount of oxygen is delivered to the tissues, and the more you depend on oxygen for energy production. This explains why, if you've been exercising regularly and you miss a few days, you'll feel tired. Your body has gotten used to operating at peak efficiency and is depleted from the lack of oxygen it has been used to.
Before you start, be sure to take your pulse. |

The emphasis on acid-alkaline blood balance came from Kitkoski's discovery that when the balance was disturbed, the blood could not absorb minerals and vitamins, regardless of the food or supplements ingested. The balance was upset by eating habits; toxic contaminants in air, food and water; and chemicals from drugs—tobacco as well as consciousness-altering substances. These enter the blood stream and become lodged in the cells, disturbing cell function. |

While whole rye contains more protein, minerals, and B vitamins than whole wheat, whole rye flour and food products are difficult to find, even in health-food stores! Most often, rye flour is combined with wheat flour in baking.
Compared to processed rye, whole grain rye is power-packed with twice the protein, three times the phosphorous and calcium, four times the riboflavin, five times the iron and thiamine, six times the niacin, and seven times the potassium. |

Fortunately, a very enjoyable, varied and flavorful diet can also be low in fat, cholesterol, salt, and sugar, while providing plenty of fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals. First, though, you may have to unlearn what you were once taught about nutrition. Remember "balance, variety, and moderation"? That advice was vague enough to include practically anything. You could meet the old "basic four" requirement with a greasy hamburger with lettuce and cheese on a bun. |

Eat fresh fruit instead of sweet snacks or desserts —you'll be getting less sugar, and more vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
ž Don't buy canned fruit, unless no fresh fruit is available. If you must buy it in cans, choose fruit packed in juice instead of syrup.
ž Don't just substitute honey for the sugar in your diet. Honey has no nutrients to speak of and still promotes tooth decay. (It does have the advantage of being slightly sweeter than sugar, though, so you may use a little less of it. And in baking it provides moisture so that you can use a little less oil or shortening. |
