Healing with Plants in the American and Mexican West

Margarita Artschwager Kay

In homeopathic remedies, plant parts are diluted to an infinitesimal amount, and an entirely different theory of phytotherapy underlies the homeopathic system. For example, Ruta graveolens—used in the American and Mexican West to treat earache or provoke abortion—is prescribed by homeopathic physicians to treat lower back pain.
All the plants used by the Aztecs for fever appeared in the phytotherapy of some of the other groups: the Aztecs believed that fevers required treatment using an emetic, a purgative, a diuretic, or a diaphoretic (Ortiz de Montellano 1990:220), properties of many plants used for fever. Arthritic conditions, including gota (gout, from Latin word for drop, referring to a "defluxation" of humors) and reuma (rheumatism, from the Latin word for flowing), were believed to be caused by fluid collecting in the painful part, "phlegm" in the old humoral system.

More information on the mineral and trace element content of various vegetables and plants is readily available in herbals and other books related to phytotherapy. As this chapter on soils and how plants extract nutrients from them has shown, our important task is to preserve the mineral content of our soil and enable, rather than inhibit, the natural cycles that replenish it. ORIGINS OF SOILS AND CLAYS Paleosols or Fossil Soils Paleosols and fossil soils are ancient soils that are extremely rich in minerals and trace elements of all kinds.

American phytotherapy Research Laboratory in Salt Lake City. "There's a lot more research that needs to be done." If you would like to include herbs in your personal cancer prevention strategy, it's important to have a realistic sense of what these plants might be able to do and what's better left to conventional medical treatment, cautions Dr. Mowrey. Remember that when it comes to cancer, herbal nutrition is probably more effective as a preventive measure than as a cure.
