So if a patient needs vitamin C, it doesn't matter whether there's a drug company around or not -- I just give them vitamin C. And the same thing with all the nutrients. There are about 150 nutrients now known to have physiological effects on the human body, and that doesn't change. We may better understand how those nutrients work, but they don't change.
Mike: Oh, okay. Here's an interesting questions: is the demand so high for this education that there's a waiting list to get into these universities, or what's the situation on that?
Dr. Pizzorno: It varies. |

It is crystallized and recrystallized so that the material we use is pharmaceutical grade vitamin C.
To start with, it is 99.93 percent pure ascorbic acid, with maybe a few minerals. There are none of the original antigens left from where it came, whether it is corn or beets. Then you mix it with a calcium source or magnesium source and you make calcium ascorbate or magnesium ascorbate, and we are always blending the two. Usually, I do not want to use just calcium, which many people do. |
In addition, you use some vitamin D3, which I applaud by the way. I mean, that has turmeric, grape seed extract; what is the thinking behind this product?
Dr. Liers: Joint Health Formula for Pets is the same as Joint Health Formula for people, except for desiccated liver as flavoring for the pets. It is a multi-dimensional product, just like Diabetes Defense. That is, I designed it so that you are not just going after joint health in one direction only. Obviously, the glucosamine hydrochloride is in there because glucosamine helps to rebuild those connective tissues. |
One was a fish oil vitamin that had like 10 milligrams of fish oil extract and the rest of it was soybean oil. That is amazing.
Dr. Liers: Often you find it's genetically modified soybean oil, as well.
Mike: Right. Let us wrap up the pet supplement section here. Do you have any other comments on that?
Dr. Liers: Our red line is core supplements. Our blue line is for specific conditions. We have in the blue line Diabetes Defense, Joint Health Formula, and Allergy Defense, which are for major conditions. Then for gastrointestinal discomfort, we offer 'GI Defense. It is a very unique formula. |

In addition to her regular conventional therapy Jean started a "pretty strong nutritional program"— with supplements, "about forty of them, including vitamin C, coenzyme Q-10, bioflavonoids, garlic, and a "medically modified" macrobiotic diet, advised by Dr. Block. He also showed her how to do biofeedback, meditation, and positive imaging to further support her immune system. By December 1994 the news was quite astonishing. Scans showed the cancer mass in her lung was shrinking; the tumor was much smaller. |
In the other, done cooperatively with New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, men with prostate cancer are put on a low-fat diet (high fat promotes prostate cancer) and given supplements of 800 IU of vitamin E, 200 micrograms of organic selenium, genistein (an antioxidant in soybeans), and soy protein. There's evidence all such supplements fight prostate cancer, says Dr. Wynder. The idea: to find out whether the diet and/or supplements curtail blood levels of PSA (prostate specific antigen), an indicator of prostate cancer activity. Dr. |

You cannot send a vitamin into Canada that has chromium picolinate in it. The Canadians understand. I use those polynicotinate and arginate forms of chromium at a couple of hundred micrograms per capsule. A typical diabetic would need to take, in the human case, three a day, and they would get 600 micrograms of chromium, which is a good amount and is therapeutic chromium for people with diabetes.
Diabetes Defense for pets is a scaled down form -- the animal version -- of our Diabetes Support Formula for humans, but you get that same typical response with the chromium unlocking the cell. |

Be sure the capsule contains vitamin E, which will be noted on the label.) One way to determine a good quality pure fish oil capsule, says one industry expert, is by the light color of the oil. He suggests laying different brands of fish oil capsules on a white piece of paper and choosing the capsule that appears lightest.
One brand of fish oil capsule that has been widely used in research is MaxEpa. Another company that has a particularly good reputation within the industry for producing high-quality, pure fish oil capsules is General Nutrition Corporation. |

At least they were free of sodium-benzoate, the preservative that we now know interacts with vitamin C to form cancer-causing benzene molecules. Their lunch containers were dyed with petro-derived purple and green coal tars (despite their name, modern dyes are derived from oil).

Each pill contains 500 milligrams of glucosamine chlorhydrate, 400 milligrams of chondroitin sulfate, as well as 66 milligrams of vitamin C and 10 milligrams of manganese. Licensed health professionals can obtain it by calling 800-925-5187. Consumers can call the same number to get the name of a local or mail-order dispensing pharmacy that sells the product. A similar combination glucosamine HCl-chondroitin sulfate supplement is also being sold directly to consumers as Osteo-Bi-Flex 450 from Sundown and GlucoPro 900 from Thompson Nutritional Products.
Should You Try It?
Absolutely. |
The same can be said of vitamin E and one of the newer miracle medicines, coenzyme Q-10. CoQ-10 is most often used by some doctors to treat heart failure and cardiovascular disease, but its growing use against cancer is also logical. Many botanical medicines, such as ginkgo and milk thistle, are also strong antioxidants, which accounts for some of their far-flung and diverse disease-fighting activity.
Perhaps those who are stuck on the concept of the magic bullet can relate to aspirin—also of plant origin. |

Empowered Foods also offers Goji Jelly Cups made with wildcrafted camu camu berries (the highest natural source of vitamin C in the world) and raw Tibetan goji berries (extremely rich in antioxidants, used for 5,000 years in Chinese Medicine).
Personally, I found the chocolate cups to be just as delicious as the bars, but I liked the bars better because they were easier to unwrap and eat. The cups take a bit of work, and if you refrigerate the Goji Jelly Cups and then bite down on one, the goji jelly smooshes out the side (yes, "smooshes" is a technical term used by nutritionists). |

Why would humans evolve a mechanism for generating a vitamin from sunlight if we weren't supposed to be exposed to sunlight in the first place?
7) If sunlight is so dangerous, then why is virtually every living creature on planet Earth dependent on sunlight for survival? Plants use sunlight to generate their nutrition, too, and most animals eat either plants or other animals that originally ate plants. Nearly all life on planet Earth is powered by sunlight. Why does the cancer industry believe sunlight causes death when, in reality, sunlight delivers life? |

It has green tea extract, grape seed extract, lipoic acid, and buffered vitamin C. We designed our red line to provide a solid foundation for pets' health.
We also offer a blue label line of supplements, which focuses on helping with specific conditions, like allergies. Allergies are a major problem in animals. Allergy Defense for pets is the same as our Allergy Support Plus for humans. Within hours you can stop the itching if you keep an animal on it. Many of them scratch away all their hair, and they are itchy and miserable. You can stop that with Allergy Defense. |

I don't believe there's a very high risk at all of vitamin A toxicity, even if you're chowing down on very large doses of spirulina on a regular basis. And I submit my own experience as a demonstration of that -- I consume large amounts of spirulina, perhaps more than any person I know, and yet I don't show any of the symptoms of vitamin A toxicity at all. But just to be safe, always work with your health care provider before starting any nutritional supplements, including spirulina. |

Red chiles have a nice amount of vitamin A, and both red and green chiles contain fiber, potassium, folic acid, and iron. Some people with sensitive skin are warned to wear rubber gloves when handling them. In general, the smaller and more pointed the pepper is, the hotter the taste.
Both animal and human studies have indicated that consumption of chile-containing meals increases both fat burning and calorie burning. And a recent study in the July 2006 American journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that chile pepper has a beneficial effect on insulin levels. |

The minerals are Kreb's cycle minerals -- the transporters that the body recognizes, and this particular vitamin has no excipients whatsoever. Nothing. The powder is put into a veggie cap. That is it. This is made for sensitive people. We just came out with this. We had been having it custom formulated in small quantities in the pharmacy for years because we did not think we could find anyone who would manufacture a product with no excipients whatsoever. It is now available on our website. It is extremely pure. I actually designed it 15 years ago for my wife, when she was chemically sensitive. |

Despite all its advances, modern medicine can only cure vitamin deficiencies, bacterial infections and a few caused by viruses, and the rare cancer. We still can't cure viruses that range from the common cold to the ones causing SARS or HIV. But while most medicines are not curative, they certainly can help the patient, either by beating back the cause of the disease or by reducing symptoms. The new medicines for HIV disease are illustrative. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). |

Though early studies using supplemental beta-carotene with smokers did not turn out the way we had hoped, the natural vitamin A and other compounds in peppers may in fact turn out to be protective. Red peppers contain beta-ayptoxanthin, a carotenoid that may lower the risk of developing lung cancer. One study, in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention, followed more than 63,000 people in China and found that those eating the most cryptoxanthin-rich foods had a 27 percent lower risk for lung cancer. |

Getting the right amounts of sunlight every day so that the liver can make the needed amounts of this essential vitamin may turn out to be vital to boosting the body's ability to fend off pollution. Finding ways to reduce attacks on our bodies from tiny amounts of combined pollutants in the air and water from our homes and workplaces is obviously important. Coming up with ways to make more natural killer cells is another part of this promising new equation—to mobilize the body's own defenses and change the environment in which cancer cells grow. |

As with a vitamin E deficiency, when the body does not have enough magnesium to support calcium absorption, many women report PMS symptoms such as mood swings, fatigue, headaches, and sleeplessness.
Premenstrual chocolate craving is a phenomenon that has puzzled many physicians. They have been unable to explain why some women have this overwhelming urge to eat lots of chocolate right before their periods, yet at other times of the month the women's chocolate cravings are not as strong. The PMS-chocolate connection makes a lot of sense because chocolate is very high in magnesium. |
