Some of the promising results of antioxidant therapy—for example, the success of beta carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, in reducing the incidence of lung cancer—have been challenged by other, less favorable studies. Still, while we are waiting for more definitive work, I think the weight of evidence justifies supplementing our diets with antioxidants.
Individual differences can be, as I've often pointed out, crucial. Nevertheless, I suggest that adults can usually take 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C and 400 international units (I.U.) of vitamin E twice a day; and 25,000 I.U. |

My favorite product, though, is their Calcium-Magnesium formula which includes not just the FoodForm versions of calcium and magnesium, but also a multitude of crucial supporting nutrients like vitamin D and strontium. If you've been taking "cheapo" calcium and wondering why your bones aren't getting any stronger, maybe it's time you switched to FoodForm supplements that actually work!
I've actually seen people take Tums as a source of calcium. It's absurd, as Tums is an antacid, and you need gastric acid to digest any minerals, including calcium. |

As for taking vitamin supplements to help with cravings and associated nutrient deficiencies, although some advocate this approach, I do not. Isolated nutrients are unnatural and can lead to chemical imbalances and other problems. Finally, the general care of your body and mind are critical as well when trying to elude the clutches of cravings and addictions of any kind. Exercise, stress reduction and quality, supportive relationships can all help in this regard.
A helpful tip for overcoming your desire for certain foods in the psychological department is to stop thinking about them. |

From a biochemical perspective, that's either a vitamin or a mineral. And we don't make these things. We really have to get them in.
Mike: Right.
Lucille: And it's not "you are what you eat"; it's really "you are what you absorb." And so digestion is extremely important. So I talk about digestion, I talk about heart health ... I talk about breast cancer being on the rise. One in every six women is dying of breast cancer and one in every two women is dying of heart disease these days.
Mike: Those are alarming numbers. |

They specifically referenced the whole vitamin story.
They'd come sometimes with a bag of 20 supplements. They'd show me all of these supplements. These are just the ones that we're honest about. I knew there were a whole lot that they weren't even telling me.
Mike: You got curious then?
Goodman: They'd ask me these questions, and eventually I said, "It's time for me to learn about it." I did a whole lot of research, and as I started to research I found that there really is something to so many of these naturopathic or natural ingredients. Why not make my own formula? |
Mike: It was like continuing medical education for vitamin research.
Goodman: I just realized that it's so important that we work together. I felt very excited, because once I put this formula together I was hoping that it was going to show a significant benefit for the cardiovascular system. We did this clinical trial at Scripps with over 50 patients with this particular product.
Mike: The HDL Booster -- that's what we're talking about here. What were the results of it?
Goodman: It's called the "Active Study." I went through the Scripps Institutional Review Board and they approved it. |
There's vitamin E. There's Arginine and grape seed extract.
What I try to do, Mike, is take a whole lot of ingredients that have some data behind them so they're not just put together and thrown in together but there's a method to it.
You can go to the website, HDLBooster.com, and read about every ingredient and what each ingredient's doing. Then, there are studies to back up every single ingredient. What I think happened when we did the study is the HDL was elevated significantly because of the multiple ingredients. That's what makes it special. There's no magic. |
When I got interested in this I would go to some of the vitamin stores and I was ask some of the people that work there, "Do you have something for the heart?" I'd ask them about cholesterol, HDL, LDL and they'd start showing me some things.
While I was there, I realized people were coming in and asking about their joints and asking about all sorts of things. One particular person was telling them what to take. They paid their money and they walked out.
That never happens in my practice. If I tell somebody, "You need a medication," they say, "Why must I take drugs? I don't want drugs. |

Nutritional Supplementation
Let me clarify an important distinction right away: nutritional supplements such as vitamin A, C, and E are not drugs but natural nutrients we should be getting from our foods. But because of depleted soils, early harvesting, hybrids, added pesticides, and food-storage techniques, our foods no longer provide all the necessary vitamins and minerals. Oxidative stress is the root cause of more than seventy chronic degenerative diseases. |

They own entire vitamin companies outright.
John: Yes, that is true, and the trade associations themselves, especially the Council for Responsible Nutrition, which publishes their membership list right on their website. Their members include gigantic, multinational drug companies.
Mike: It sounds just like the Center for Consumer Freedom, which is sponsored by junk food and soda companies.
John: There are different entities out there that are a bit of a joke. That is life in the big city. That is Capitol Hill for you. It is just a cesspool.

With each ingredient used in their formulas, from minerals like calcium and magnesium, to vitamin E and specialty nutrients like Phosphatidylserine (PS) or hyaluronic acid (HA), Wellness Resources consistently uses the most potent and highly-purified forms of each ingredient. To me, that's impressive, since so many of the larger, more popular supplement companies tend to use the cheapest forms of ingredients available (like ultra-cheap calcium carbonate, which is about the same as chewing up sea shells). |

That's also a great way to save money on vitamin D supplements.
Another reason I don't like cows' milk as a source of calcium is because there is a lot of bad that goes in with the good of the calcium. You get the homogenized milk fats, which I call "processed milk fats." You will also get a whole lot of calories.
You know, milk, I think, is very deceptively marketed. When milk says 2 percent milk fat on the label, a lot of people are under the misimpression that from a calorie counting point of view, you only get 2 percent of your calories from fat when you're drinking a glass of milk. |

What the men need, again, is sunlight and vitamin D. You can eliminate the vast majority of prostate cancer in this country by getting people to take in a healthy dose of sunlight and giving them basic nutritional supplements like cod liver oil, zinc and selected herbs.
So out of the long list of things that we could be doing to enhance public health, to eliminate chronic disease and to improve nutrition, the only thing that these doctors can come up with in terms of a suggestion is to test the whole country for AIDS. |

And I submit my own experience as a demonstration of that -- I consume large amounts of spirulina, perhaps more than any person I know, and yet I don't show any of the symptoms of vitamin A toxicity at all. But just to be safe, always work with your health care provider before starting any nutritional supplements, including spirulina. |
We're seeing a lot of information about vitamin D supplementation with cod liver oil. We're seeing research on herbs like turmeric, now being shown to be a strong anti-cancer herb and something that boosts immune system function. We're learning how cinnamon can control blood sugar levels in diabetics. We're learning about the super healing powers of fruits such as blueberries and raspberries. We're seeing more research on garlic and how garlic can prevent cancer. We're also seeing research on ginseng and how ginseng extracts prevent colds and flus during the flu season. The list goes on and on. |
Astaxanthin - vitamin X
One of the next things I'm really excited about is a product called astaxanthin. It’s something I've done a considerable amount of research on, and in fact I plan to do a rather large report on it in the future. Astaxanthin is harvested from microalgae, and is a pigment phytochemical that alga produce when they become stressed and think that their environment is changing for the worse. |

Distribution is the challenge for vitamin makers
If you go to a show like this, and you talk to the 1,700-plus vendors offering products, you begin to realize that the big bottleneck for these vendors is distribution. They need to get into the retail channels to really sell products. It's difficult for them to find customers, so they rely on shelf space to get in front of people. Of course, it's a solid, proven strategy. It works.
The problem is that there's only so much shelf space at every health food store or natural grocery store. |
Here's a case where a nutrient-rich vitamin formula is very easy to drink; it tastes something like a sports drink, and has just a little bit of fructose and stevia in it. It's not too sweet, and it has no artificial ingredients -- no artificial colors, preservatives, sucralose, aspartame, or artificial chemical sweeteners healthy people already know to avoid.
It's a great product. I've tasted it myself, and I think it is a great way to get nutrients into your body. |

First he gave me 3,000 mg of vitamin C. This is to boost the antioxidants in your system and help nutritionally protect you from the mercury. Knowing something about chlorella and superfoods, I also took chlorella before that appointment, because chlorella binds with heavy metals and prevents them from being absorbed by your system.
The next thing he did was put oxygen on my nose only, so I could breathe through my nose and get fresh oxygen. Why is this important? |

Mike: Then are your customers the vitamin companies and formulators, or do you offer some things direct to consumers?
Kilham: I don't personally offer products direct to consumers. I work with different companies. And I'm a real ardent believer in trade. You know you have a lot of academics who feel that if they get involved with trade, they're somehow tainting their academic position. I teach at the University of Massachusetts, but my opinion is that trade is the most direct way to provide environmental and cultural benefits. |

Mike: Okay. Can people order online from you, or only through the channel?
Gregg: Sure they can. They can order online also.
Mike: What's the online price for these products?
Gregg: The online price is $19.99 a bottle, (with) free shipping.
Mike: Okay. For those (reading this interview), these are shaped and sized just like a bottle of, say...
Gregg: McCormick spice, like a shake-on spice, and there's 42 servings or 42 meals per bottle of shake-on.
Mike: Okay. |

So they start out with a vitamin D deficiency due to lack of sunlight, and they end up with a calcium deficiency even though they're taking lots of calcium supplements. The end result is, of course, osteoporosis or osteomalacia, the advanced stage of osteoporosis. Once that's diagnosed by conventional medicine, they're usually given hormone replacement therapy or a variety of prescription drugs rather than simply being told to get more sunlight and engage in some form of physical exercise to enhance bone mineral density. |

It's suddenly illegal to buy any amount of vitamin C over 50 mg, for example. It's illegal to buy various minerals, such as vanadium or boron. It becomes illegal to buy tocotrienols, or other antioxidants derived from plants. Well, what's the next step? It is, of course, to outlaw medicinal foods entirely!
Can you imagine a world in which it would be illegal to purchase and consume garlic? It sounds ridiculous, right? You say, "Oh, come on, that's just exaggeration!" But is it really? Garlic is one of the most medicinally potent foods in the world. |

In fact, there seems to be a systemic anti-cancer effect provided by sunlight exposure and vitamin D. If you haven't already, be sure to read the free report available for downloading at http://www.truthpublishing.com. It's an interview with Dr. Michael Holick on this very topic. It's a fascinating read. That interview was conducted before this new study was published, but I'm sure this study is bringing a smile to Dr. Michael Holick's face, and hopefully increasing awareness of the importance of sunlight exposure across the U.S. population -- especially in the medical community. |

Just because someone is offering something that seems to be a natural vitamin or mineral supplement doesn't mean it's not being over-hyped.
In fact, there are many hucksters and con artists in the nutritional supplement industry, just as there are in the pharmaceutical industry. So, my position has never been that all nutritional supplements are good and that all pharmaceuticals are bad. It's just that if you're looking for what's truly healthy you're only going to find them from the natural world and never from the world of manufactured, synthesized drugs. |
