Whole-grain products have more fiber, they have a little bit more protein and they have a lot more of the vitamin, mineral and nutrient content of the original whole grain. Depending on how they're processed, they can also contain some of the healthy oils found in the original whole grain. The best grain to get, by the way, is sprouted grains. You've seen this at the health food store, perhaps. Ezekiel bread is a great example of this. I'm currently eating a cereal that's made with nothing but sprouted grains: Ezekiel cereal by Food For Life. This is a fantastic product. |

Well, it turns out you can delay and slow down the aging process of the mitochondria by using fairly large doses of certain nutrients, and the ones that are of primary importance are lipoic acid, carnitine, vitamin E, and coenzyme Q10. There's actually a fair amount of animal research, and just now we're starting to see human research showing that these are able to substantially improve mitochondrial function in older animals and humans.
Mike: And getting back to COQ10, the production of COQ10 is suppressed by statin drugs, you mentioned.
Dr. Pizzorno: Yes, it is. |

For this reason, this section only covers iron deficiency and pernicious anemia, since preventing and treating them may be as simple as adding some supplements to your vitamin regimen.
Iron deficiency anemia is most common during childhood, adolescence and the later years of life. Additionally, heavy menstruation, pregnancy and lactation may cause anemia in women. During infancy, childhood and adolescence, the human body needs more iron than usual in order to support growth spurts. |

In addition, in some (but not all) animal studies, vitamin B6 deficient rats that were fed a high-protein (70 percent protein) diet developed fatty liver. A low intake of B6 can impair glucose tolerance. And in a low-carbohydrate diet, the body makes needed glucose from noncarbohydrate sources (like protein), a process called gluconeogenesis (see chapter 2 for a full explanation of this process). During gluconeogenesis, B6 levels are depleted from muscle, another reason for supplementing with B6 while on a low-carb diet. |
Green drinks pack an incredible nutritional wallop and usually have amazing phytonutrient and vitamin profiles. They are very alkalizing (and are thus a terrific balance to a higher-meat diet), they're usually made from organic sources, they're very low in calories, and most have no more than 3 to 4 grams of (low-glycemic) carbohydrate, an insignificant amount unless you are on the strictest of induction-stage diets (and even then you can work them in). You can find them in most health food and whole food supermarkets, and you should definitely consider making them part of your program. |
For those who are interested, there is information on the many clinics in southern California where, depending on the program you choose, you get counseling two to five times a week, regular weigh-ins on a digital scale, medical supervision, and optional vitamin injections.

Certain members of the B vitamin family, like B5, B6, choline, and inositol, have special importance to people on weight loss programs. Choline is important in the transport and metabolism of fats, while inositol is important for the uptake of fatty acids by the cells. Both have been shown to alleviate, prevent, or improve fatty liver. They are usually included in a B complex formula; "fat-burning formulas" may have increased amounts.

Will their doctors recommend vitamin C, echinacea, elderberry, vitamin A, zinc, or homeopathic oscillococcinum? No, they won't. The archaic solutions offered by the CDC include a radio ad, "Just Say No - Snort, sniffle, sneeze - No antibiotics please." Their commonsense recommendations, that most people do anyway, include resting, drinking plenty of fluids, and using a humidifier.
The pharmaceutical industry claims they are all for limiting the use of antibiotics. |

In most cases, copper has been found safe at recommended dosage levels. However, in Wilson's disease, a rare hereditary disorder, copper accumulates in the liver or brain, causing toxicity. The symptoms of this condition can include hepatitis, degeneration of the lens of the eye, kidney malfunction, and neurological disorders. The disease is fatal if not diagnosed and properly treated. |

I strongly recommend this book for those who really want to know how vitamin D works and what a fascinating journey it takes through your body. You’ll learn how it is transformed by one organ and stored by another, and how the kidney, the liver, and the skin are needed to create this crucial nutrient for human health.

Meanwhile, vitamin D may help prevent acne outbreaks by aiding in cell respiration. All of these supplements can help you keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.
One thing to remember about acne—this is a way your body is using to try to get rid of toxins. Your skin is an organ that can excrete waste products, and acne is one way that your body is actually excreting internal toxins through your skin to get rid of them. The classic model and explanation for acne is really incomplete.
The classic model says that acne is simply caused by bacteria—but that's not entirely true. |
Buy organic: Organically-produced fruits and vegetables consistently have a higher vitamin and mineral content than conventionally-produced. Buying organic not only saves you from the toxicity of pesticides and heavy metals, it boosts the nutritional density of the produce.
«•* Eatsea vegetables: Consuming spirulina or sea vegetables (like kelp, bladderwrack, kombu, dulse, wakame, nori, etc.) delivers ocean-rich minerals to your body in a bioavailable form. |

Other practical examples:
• If you hold the pendulum over a vitamin or a non-pesticided organic food, it will typically go in a circle, which suggests a "yes". If there is something about the product that is not good for you, it will typically give a "no" response.
If you have five bottles of a vitamin and want to know which is best, test each one. If, for example, a bottle causes a back and forth movement, this suggests a "no", or that the contents are not good for you. Look for the bottle which makes the pendulum go in a circle because this is the signal for a possible "yes". |

Apart from the importance of outdoor exercise, children of all ages need exposure to sunlight to meet their body's requirement for vitamin D. Although in hot sunshine children should take precautions (the fair-skinned particularly need good dollops of suncream, broad-brimmed hats and advice to keep in the shade), there are too many benefits to outdoor play to let fear keep our children indoors. |
Over the years, studies of children with ADHD and dyslexia have frequently pointed towards various mineral and vitamin deficiencies, usually resulting in a surge in the sales of food supplements. But when human beings eat a balanced diet, supplements aren't generally necessary. Too much sugar is a sure way of putting the diet out of balance. In the words of Oxford scientist Bernard Gesch, 'There is evidence that nutrition can improve [developmental conditions J.More importantly, if careful diet can be used to treat these, it's possible we can also prevent them in the first place. |
For instance, in a review of studies in 2005 the British Nutrition
Foundation found that 50 per cent of children had a marginal intake of vitamin A and 75 per cent had a marginal intake of zinc, both essential nutrients.
A long-term study at the University of Southern California claimed that if children's diets lacked a variety of minerals in the first three years, the children were more likely to be irritable and aggressive at eight years old, more likely to swear and cheat at eleven, and more likely to steal and bully at seventeen. |

Cholesterol plays a vital role in every living being. Microbes, bacteria, viruses, plants, animals, and human beings all depend on it. Since cholesterol is so important for our body, we cannot solely depend on its supply from external sources, but must be able to produce it internally as well. Normally, our body makes about half a gram to one gram of cholesterol a day, depending on the amount required by the body at the time. |

Chemotherapy radiation will attack cancer cells first if the healthy cells are full of antioxidants, full of vitamin C and full of things like that. Then there's no room for the chemotherapy to get in.

Although the damage caused to the liver and brain cells is possibly the most obvious adverse effect, there are many other, less obvious, deleterious effects such as vitamin and mineral depletion, sexual dysfunction, depression, and hypoglycemia. In particular, the very important B-group vitamins and the minerals calcium, magnesium, and zinc are depleted by heavy alcohol consumption, exacerbating these and other conditions—osteoporosis for instance.
Avoidance of these unpleasant symptoms is, of course, possible by abstinence from alcohol consumption. |

However, what alternative therapies will do – and among those I include antioxidants and vitamin C – is protect healthy cells in the body so that now, when the patient receives chemotherapy and/or radiation, the healthy cells are protected, and antioxidants do not protect malignant cells.
Mike: That's a very good point.
Frank: It's just because of the physiological make-up of cancer cells as opposed to normal cells, receptor sites and availability. |
