Most legume (bean) seeds, for example, contain compounds called phytates, which effectively slow or prevent the absorption of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from the intestinal tract of animals. So the more of certain seeds an animal eats, the less nourishment it receives. You can bet that an animal losing weight rapidly learns which plant parts to avoid. (Cooking beans diminishes but does not eliminate the effect of phytates.)
Another type of anti-nutrient acts in a way similar to that used by cancer specialists to destroy or slow the development of rapidly growing cells. |

While the company defended their race-specific vitamins by invoking the notion that gender- and age-specific products are accepted in most developed economies, they were assailed on the basis that their product tacitly reinforces racial/ethnic divisions in society and reifies a genetic homogeneity that simply does not exist. As ABC News correspondent Dr. David Katz said, genetic reductionism is specious and unhelpful: "We make a mistake thinking we're all that different from each other. |

The green base has more fiber, minerals (magnesium, potassium, calcium), antioxidants, vitamins (folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin K), and a whole host of nutrients. All of this comes in a package that has almost no calories and generates antacid to alkalinize your metabolism.
You can serve all of the meat entrees and egg dishes on a bed of greens. Let the juices and flavors from the meat and vegetables serve as dressing rather than separating the greens into a salad bowl. The interaction of textures and flavors makes the food interesting and tasty. |
Concentrated forms have negligible amounts of vitamins A and D.
In studies of adults, researchers have seen no adverse effects with doses of up to 8,000 milligrams per day of combined EPA and DHA. A weight-based dose to achieve 2,000 milligrams a day in an average-health adult would be about 15 milligrams per pound of body weight per day of combined EPA and DHA.
Calcium
Many vitamin D supplements contain calcium, and some also contain magnesium. Typically, such supplements don't have more than 200 IUs of vitamin D per tablet, which reduces their usefulness as a vitamin D supplement. |

The synthesis of coenzyme Qiq involves a complex process requiring the amino acid tyrosine and at least eight vitamins and several trace elements. The quinone ring of coenzyme Qio is formed from tyrosine. The polyisoprenoid side chain is made from acetyl-Coenzyme A. Thus, the structure of coenzyme Q10 includes a benzo-quinone, or chemical structure containing a six-carbon benzene ring featuring two sets of double-bonded carbons. The isoprenoid side chain is attached at the sixth carbon on the ring (see Figure 4.1 on page 67). |
A deficiency in any of the required amino acids, vitamins, and other minerals impairs the endogenous formation of coenzyme Qi0 in the body. Without coenzyme Q10, our bodies cannot survive. As coenzyme Qi0 levels in the cells falls, so does our general health. Clearly, this is a vital nutrient. But what is coenzyme Qiq, and why is it so important and crucial for survival?
Coenzyme Qiq is a fat-soluble compound. It functions as a coenzyme in the energy-producing metabolic pathways of every cell in the body, and it has a powerful antioxidant activity. |
The antioxidants we normally produce in our bodies or add to our diets (such as vitamins C and E and the minerals selenium and zinc) help to cancel out the chemical activity of free radicals and protect our cells. Antioxidants surrender themselves, offering their electrons freely to neutralize the invading oxidants in these metabolic reactions, like suicide pilots sacrificing themselves for the benefit of their cause. |
This process is dependent upon a sufficient intake of oxygen and essential nutrients, vitamins, and cofactors. The end product is the pulsation of healthy cells. (Every living cell has a pulsatory activity. The cells have resting as well as generative phases, and the maintenance of proper cellular function depends on a multitude of complex variables.)
A deficiency or imbalance in any part of the system may contribute, over time, to the impaired functioning of the cell, tissues, organs, and eventually the entire body. |

Many people with celiac disease also have deficiencies of potassium, magnesium, iron, and vitamins A, K, and B. If you have recurrent canker sores or irritable bowel syndrome and other bowel symptoms, see a doctor for an evaluation.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes patches of silvery, scaling skin that build up on a red base. Patches commonly occur on the scalp, elbows, knees, feet, and buttocks, but they can show up just about anywhere. Many people with psoriasis have abnormal nail growth, eye and joint inflammation, and intestinal inflammation. |

Given the small risk that you may be one of these women I recommend taking folate before yon conceive (the only time I will tell you to take vitamins or supplements).
STEROIDS
Several steroids are sold over the counter as supplements, although they probably should be classified as drugs because they have potentially dangerous side effects. Steroids are produced by the body and promote secondary sexual characteristics and reproduction (androgenic effects) as well as increases in muscle mass (anabolic). They are often marketed as antiaging pills or as energy and libido enhancers. |

Vitamin A and beta-carotene
Vitamin A, or retinol, is essential for keeping the mucous membranes lining the respiratory passages, lungs and digestive system healthy, and for good vision. It improves resistance to infection, and is necessary for bone and blood vessel growth. Vitamin A is also responsible for maintaining an active thymus gland (part of the immune system). |

However, years of research and large studies with tens of thousands of patients have shown that vitamins do not prevent heart disease or cancer. In fact, rather than protecting your health, unnecessary amounts of vitamin A can actually have the opposite effect. In the beta-carotene component of the Physicians' Health Study, 22,071 male physicians were randomized to either beta-carotene at doses equal to two carrots a day or to a placebo for a twelve-year period. |

The preparation also leads to loss of micro-nutrients, particularly vitamins Bl, B2, B3, C, E and zinc. The food processing industry has contributed to the increase in asthma in today's society, as well as to other diseases of our time like diverticulitis, gall stones, heart disease, varicose veins, diabetes and constipation, among many others. There is also evidence that hyperactivity in children is related to their diet.
If you don't know exactly what is causing your asthma but suspect it is caused by a food, start a food diary. List everything you eat. |

It wasn't just Ritalin and Prozac that had become as socially acceptable as once-a-day vitamins. For many Iowans, their lives now revolved around their prescriptions.
Daily they swallowed their proton pump inhibitors and COX-2 inhibitors, tricyclics and analgesics, benzodiazepines and amphetamines, anticoagulants and antihypertensives, as well as their lipid reducers, serotonin escalators, and mood stabilizers.
On average, each Iowan now picked up fourteen prescriptions a year from the pharmacy. Some of the highest users needed that many medicines every day. |

CONTROLLING ASTHMA IN ALTERNATIVE WAYS
ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES

When patients are afraid to mention alternative supplements and vitamins they may be taking, they may expose themselves to these dangerous combinations. Rather than dismiss our patients' entreaties for guidance, refuse to prescribe for them out of fear of potential drug interactions, or reject alternative therapies out of hand, it behooves us as doctors to consider and understand the range of complementary therapies available and when they can be safely integrated into medical practice. Only then can we help patients "come out of the closet," so to speak. |

In April 2006, GenSpec Labs put out a line of vitamins that purportedly addresses the needs of different races. These "targeted-nutrient" pills, as they are called, contain elevated vitamin D and zinc and are aimed at African-Americans and Hispanics—populations said to be genetically predisposed to deficiencies in those nutrients. |

It is a major site of metabolic functions, including those affecting protein, fat, minerals, and vitamins. It processes the internal wastes your body produces during the normal course of metabolism; produces or aids in the manufacture of bile, hormones, and enzymes; and stores and processes fats and carbohydrates. It is a major detoxification organ in your body. However, it can become overtaxed because of the enormous load of chemicals from the highly processed food we tend to ingest, pesticides and other toxins to which we are constantly exposed, and the many other assaults of modern living. |

This has prompted some physicians to recommend the three vitamins as supplements. Proof is lacking in the form of randomized controlled trials, although a recently published study appears to have confirmed the effect of folic acid supplementation on cognitive performance in human beings. Jane Durga et al. structured a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study that took place between November 1999 and December 2004 in the Netherlands. Researchers randomly assigned 818 male and female participants aged fifty to seventy 800 milligrams daily oral folic acid or placebo for three years. |
Other experts recommend eating antioxidant-rich diets full of fruits and vegetables, since it is theorized that such antioxidants as vitamins E and C and selenium may have the capacity to neutralize free radicals by donating their electrons to help with stability. An abundance of antioxidants, it is held, may preempt the chain reaction of damage to living cells in the body.
These theories withstanding, the long-term effects of antioxidants have not been proven. |

Most of us take vitamins, exercise, and make other choices to maintain or increase our wellness. In the same way, periodic check-ups using NES or other energy- and information-based modalities can help you maintain the best bioenergetic health possible over the long term, helping to correct problems before they get to the level of the physical body. Each approach to health—allopathic and alternative—has its strengths and weaknesses. |

Many people still believe that eating a well-balanced diet will provide all the vitamins, minerals and enzymes necessary for good health. In ideal circumstances this is the case, but in reality a well-balanced diet is usually found in books and rarely on the table. Soil depletion, food processing, chemical additives, pesticide residues, toxic emissions, stress, emotional trauma and the overuse of drugs all increase our need for additional micro-nutrients to ensure a healthy life.
This need for added nutrients is much greater today than it was in past generations. |

THE FAB FIVE: SUPPLEMENT YOUR DIET
A multivitamin and mineral supplement from a reputable supplier will ensure at least the bare minimum of 20 to 50 trace elements, vitamins, and minerals that may be missing from even the best diets. Taken twice a day, it forms a good base upon which to restore your "house." The following four supplements also give you the best bang for your buck:
Vitamin E A potent antioxidant, but most products are a synthetic dl-alpha tocopherol, which actually may have no antioxidant activity! |
You may also have heard that recent studies do not show a clear benefit to supplementing with certain vitamins; but then why has the FDA recently upped the recommendations for a multi-vitamin, folic acid, and vitamin D for all Americans? To date, research has only scratched the surface regarding the usefulness of supplements.
There are two approaches to supplementation. The first is that if you eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, they provide more of every compound than your genes can use. |
Responding to this newfound threat to public health, the federal government mandated that white flour be fortified with a bare minimum of eight essential vitamins and minerals-the very ones that steel-roller milling removed. To avoid a public relations nightmare, the new flour was called
"enriched white flour," marketing-speak for "stuff so lethal that the federal government made us put some other stuff in it so it won't kill you as quickly." That 1920s mandate made white flour "safe" again. We loved our white flour so much that we wanted it at any cost. |
Recent evidence suggests that antioxidants like vitamins E, D, A, DHEA, and melatonin are alike in their effects in that they show exactly the same hormetic response curve as any other stressor.10"13 At low doses they're good for you and at high doses they are bad for you. You could even say that low-doses of supplements induce longevity, and high-doses of supplements decrease it.
