When you take a green bean off of a bean bush in your garden and eat it in its raw living form, you're giving yourself an outstanding form of nutrition that goes beyond merely the vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, carbohydrates, and other measurable nutrients in that green bean. You're giving yourself nutrition in its living form from a plant that was actually breathing just moments before (yes, plants breathe, too). You are ingesting a form of life that enhances your own life, because once again, all living things have many things in common when it comes to nutrition. |

And often cravings indicate a lack of certain vitamins or minerals. But most people interpret those cravings as hunger for comfort foods.
For example, when a person craves magnesium, the body might be trying to tell them that they should get more magnesium in order to be healthier. But many people interpret that as a craving for chocolate, which contains magnesium. So they will eat a giant piece of chocolate instead of just getting calcium and magnesium into their body through natural food sources.
There's nothing wrong with chocolate if it were eaten in its raw form from the cocoa plant. |

But even here the dangers of these vitamins, such as vitamin D-3 and vitamin A, have been grossly exaggerated.
Orthomolecular Medicine
Dr Linus Pauling, in his fundamental study of "orthomolecular" nutrition and in his celebrated book Vitamin C and the Common Cold, has shown how the human body lost its ability during evolution to make certain nutrients. About 60 million years ago man, other primates, the guinea pig, and an Indian fruit-eating bat lost the ability to make vitamin C. The process has not stopped. |

Digestive difficulties begin even before this level of acidity is reached:
Clinical research by Dr. M. T. Morter (Arkansas, U.S.A.) has shown that if the anabolic urinary and saliva pH (measured immediately upon awakening) is below 6.8, we can be relatively certain that digestive support must be provided. Controlled clinical studies by Dr. Paul Yanick (Pasadena, U.S.A.) have confirmed Dr. Morter's findings and recorded that intracellular assimilation of nutrients is significantly decreased when the anabolic pH is below 6.8. |

If the bacteria could just swim over to the nearest vitamins (riboflavin and biotin are especially abundant) just a few body lengths away, they might still be able to cross in time before they founder from lack of iron.
They don't make it. The living egg white creates from its depths other substances, far smaller and more manoeuvrable than the bacteria, and these reach the bobbing vitamins first, wrap around and almost destroy them, rendering them useless to the bacteria when they do finally arrive.
That was the last chance the bacteria had. |

Find people who take vitamins and use medicinal herbs. Find the kind of people you'd find in health food stores. Look at those people and ask yourself the same questions. How do they look? What kind of health do they seem to be demonstrating? If you compare these two groups, it becomes immediately obvious that the results you get are based on the belief system you follow.
If you follow organized medicine, take those prescription drugs, go get those surgical procedures, and you believe all those doctors, the FDA, and everything the drug companies tell you, you're going to be quite diseased. |

In the United States, another psychoanalytic psychiatrist, Rene Spitz, had provided an apparently vivid demonstration of the truth of Bowlby's proclamation with his famous 1945 studies—far more dramatic in their message than Anna Freud's work—documenting the emotional and physical regression of infants living in a foundling home. All of the children in this home, Spitz noted, received excellent physical care in a scrupulously hygienic environment. Good hygiene, it was believed, was the key to good health. |

They were supposed to be eating whole grains and getting the vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein and essential fatty acids found in those whole grains.
Eaten with the whole grain, consuming the carbohydrate part of the grain is NOT harmful. That's why whole grains are so good for you even though you're still eating the endosperm carbohydrates section. The danger only comes when we isolate the parts of these grains and we isolate the nutritionally depleted parts to be ground up as white flour. |

To stay healthy, you don't have to eat all that vitamin-rich food anymore. Just pop in a couple of those colorful vitamin pills a day and your health is taken care of, or so the ad slogans tell you. But if you don't pay heed to this "common-sense" advice, doctors tell you that you may become vitamin deficient and put your health at risk.
And so we act obediently, out of fear of risking our lives. |

While many "one-a-day" supplements provide good levels of vitamins, they are woefully insufficient in the levels of minerals.
Realistic Expectations
In addition to the enormous number of studies showing benefits from the individual nutrients in a high-potency multiple, studies have shown that people taking a multiple vitamin and mineral formula may experience higher energy levels, improved brain function, fewer colds or infections, improved ability to deal with stress, a greater sense of well-being, and other health benefits. |
These items offer little in terms of protein, vitamins, or minerals. What they do have, though, is lots of "empty calories" in the form of sugar and fat. These empty calories are exactly what is leading to the epidemic of obesity and diabetes.
Here are some guidelines for making healthier eating choices: þRead labels carefully. If sugar, fat, or salt is one of the first three ingredients listed, it is probably not a good option. þBe aware that words such as sucrose, glucose, maltose, lactose, fructose, corn syrup, and white grape juice concentrate on the label mean that sugar has been added. |
The digestive system does the best it can with what we provide it, but without the important vitamins and minerals available in plant foods, the chances of cell damage increases. And that raises the risk of degenerative diseases such as diabetes.
A vast number of substances found in fruits and vegetables are known to promote health. Such substances include antioxidant nutrients such as vitamin C and folic acid and a group of other compounds known as phytochemicals. |
They are rich sources of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, and protein. Vegetables also provide high quantities of anticancer phytochemicals.
It is very important not to overcook vegetables. Overcooking not only will result in loss of important nutrients; it will also alter the flavor of the vegetable. Light steaming, baking, and quick stir-frying are the best ways to cook vegetables. Do not boil vegetables unless you are making soup, as most of the nutrients are left in the water. If fresh vegetables are not available, frozen vegetables are preferred over their canned counterparts. |

The harm this was supposed to do was not nearly as well articulated as the sheer indignation that anyone could even think of messing with the one thing people feel they have some control over in maintaining their health, their diet and the vitamins they take to supplement it.
In the 21st century we live under siege. There are concerns about pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, genetically-modified food, mobile phones, microwaves, amalgam fillings, falling sperm counts, mad cows, MMR - even milk. Farmed salmon is a Trojan Horse for carcinogens. Obesity and diabetes are on the march. |

Inositol
Inositol is one of the B complex vitamins, a precursor of the phos-phatidylinositol cycle. It plays a role in the metabolism of cholinergic, noradrenergic, and serotoninergic systems. These systems are considered most important in regulating mood and other disorders of the brain.
Therapeutic Uses
Professor C. Belmaker, Hoffer-Vickar Chair in Psychiatry, Unit for Orthomolecular Clinical Research, Ben Gurion University, has reported that high doses of inositol, about 200 mg per kilogram, was therapeutic for mood disorders, including anxiety and depression. |

This means children with a sugar habit are likely to end up deficient in the minerals and vitamins found in a balanced diet. For instance, in a review of studies in 2005 the British Nutrition
Foundation found that 50 per cent of children had a marginal intake of vitamin A and 75 per cent had a marginal intake of zinc, both essential nutrients. |

Elderly women are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of weight loss impacting their bone health. Weight loss in this group may lead to accelerated bone loss and a higher risk of fractures, particularly of the hip.34
Studies have shown that excessive animal protein in the diet may promote bone loss. It particularly causes an increase in urinary excretion of calcium. Raising daily animal protein intake from 47 to 142 grams doubles the excretion of calcium in the urine.35 Calcium is mobilized from the bone to buffer the acidic breakdown products of protein. |

Many enzyme systems within the body require optimal doses of vitamins to remedy defects in the synthesis of vital metabolic products to sustain adequate health. Linus Pauling believed that "mental disease is for the most part caused by abnormal reaction rates, as determined by genetic constitution and diet, and by abnormal molecular concentrations of essential substances. |
The authors of this study went further by stating that the "examples discussed here are likely to represent only a small fraction of the total number of defective enzymes that would be responsive to therapeutic vitamins."
Likely, a good percentage of anxiety patients would respond to optimal doses of vitamin B-3 to correct both the disordered biochemistry and the resulting neuropsychiatric manifestations, particularly those which result from defective enzymatic activity. |
Therapeutic Recommendation
Unlike the vitamins, the benefits of minerals are more or less due to the correction of a deficiency state. However, they can also be prescribed to patients who might have a mineral dependency where optimal supplementation would be a required factor in the correction of faulty metabolism.
In cases where there is a documented deficiency of calcium or magnesium, supplementation can produce substantial benefits. |

Improving Insulin Function and Sensitivity
The first step in improving insulin function and sensitivity is achieving ideal body weight and following the dietary and lifestyle recommendations given in Chapter 7, including taking a high-potency multiple -vitamin and mineral formula to ensure that the body has all of the necessary essential vitamins and minerals that proper insulin sensitivity requires. Using PGX or higher dosages of other sources of soluble fiber has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity. |

Pharmacology: Inulin is a polymer of fructose that is not digested and does not increase blood sugar. It decreases postprandial hyperglycemia. In research, 20 g caused only a mild rise in blood sugar, which was significantly lower than the same dose of fructose. |

Our rule of thumb for vitamins is that slightly too much is better than too little, whereas with drugs, our rule is that too little is better than too much.
Safety
Only 1 mg tablets are available over the counter based upon the false idea that folic acid in larger amounts may cover the symptoms of pernicious anemia. There is a very remote danger (discussed earlier) that giving folic acid will mask a vitamin B-12 deficiency (pernicious anemia), but a vitamin B-12 blood level will show whether this is a problem. The fear that it will mask pernicious anemia is unjustified but pervasive. |

In summary, if a person's diet lacks vitamins, minerals, and anti-cancer compounds because he or she does not consume sufficient quantities of fruits and vegetables, the solution to the problem lies not in taking supplements, but in making profound, far-reaching changes to diet. There are no and there will be no miracle cures that are able to entirely repair the damage caused by a diet of poor quality; you cannot eat just anything and then get off by taking a pill!
