The alcohol cuts this conditioner's moisturizing ability, and makes it best for normal to dry hair that has a normal to thin texture.
© Swimmers Conditioner ($8.50 for 8 ounces) contains nothing that makes it preferred for swimmers. It is similar to the Green Tea Herbal Creme Rinse above, and the same comments apply.
© B-5 Design Gel ($10.75 for 8 ounces) is a silky, minimally sticky gel that provides a soft, light hold that can be brushed through with ease. |

Insufficient alpha-lipoic acid can seriously compromise the effectiveness of other antioxidants, including vitamins C and E. It directly recycles and extends the lifespans of vitamin C and glutathione, and it indirectly renews vitamin E. This unique antioxidant is not considered a vitamin because the body can manufacture adequate amounts; however, there is some evidence that adding to our natural production may have its advantages. Interest in alpha-lipoic acid is increasing rapidly among diabetes researchers. |

Using plain safflower (or olive, almond, apricot, sunflower, or jojoba) oil not only would be less expensive, but also would be a way to moisturize very dry hair without adding fragrance (which this product contains).
© $$$ Intensive Repairateur Deep Conditioning Pak ($24.50for 4 ounces) is nearly identical to the Deep Conditioning Protein Pak above, and the same comments apply. Why this product costs several dollars more is a question worth asking, but don't expect a straight answer.

Daily Clarifying Shampoo, for Normal to Oily Hair ($1.32 for 15 ounces) is a below-standard shampoo that contains ammonium xylenesulfonate, a solvent that can swell the hair shaft and cause dryness with repeated use.
© Extra Body Shampoo ($1.32 for 15 ounces) is a very good shampoo for all hair types and poses no risk of buildup. The chelating agent can remove chlorine, mineral, and styling product buildup.
© Moisturizing Shampoo, for Normal to Dry Hair ($1.32 for 15 ounces) is nearly identical to the Extra Body Shampoo above, and the same review applies. |
The silicones present make hair feel silky smooth, but over time can build up on the hair, which won't help with its fullness.
© Soothing Lotion for Dry Scalp Leave-In Treatment ($4.99 for 6.8 ounces) would have been a slam-dunk solution for all-day control of dandruff, but this product (which contains 0.1% zinc pyrithione as its active ingredient) contains camphor. Camphor does nothing to address the cause or symptoms of dandruff but will cause irritation and exacerbate an itchy scalp. |
This is akin to a standard silicone serum, and ends up being costly for what you get. The sunscreens cannot be relied on to protect color-treated hair from UV damage. As with all silicone serums, this can work well to smooth hair and tame frizzies.
© VitalEsse, Repair and Shine ($11.70 for 1.8 ounces) is nearly identical to the True-Hue Color Treatment above, only this contains a small amount of alcohol to reduce the heavy effect of the silicones, and omits the sunscreens. Otherwise, the same comments apply. |

These foods tend to be robbed of their natural minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. Very refined foods, such as white sugar and white flour, are so severely stripped of their mineral content, they are virtually all acid-forming in the body.
In contrast to refined sugars, raw fruits (which are also very sweet due to their fructose content) are accompanied by such an abundance of alkalizing minerals that the total fruit is alkaline-forming in the body. |

Lengacher and colleagues at the College of Nursing, University of South Florida, questioned a series of 105 women with breast cancer and found that 64 percent regularly used vitamins and minerals and 33 percent regularly used antioxidants, herbs, and health foods. Of the 105 women, 49 percent prayed and received spiritual healing, 37 percent went to support groups, and 21 percent focused on humor or laughter therapy. Massage was used by 27 percent of all participants at least once after diagnosis. |

The amounts of protein and calcium, as well as other vitamins and fat and sugar, vary considerably from one brand to another. Most brands have 6 to 11 grams of protein per 8 ounces (i cup). My favorite soymilks are Westsoy Unsweetened Vanilla Organic Soymilk and Original Edensoy Extra Organic Soymilk. Keep in mind that soy fat is good fat. I personally like full-fat soymilk. Beware of added calories in the form of sugar.
Soymilk can be substituted for cow's milk in baking. |

In the 1990s, the USP renewed its efforts to address the issue of establishing quality standards for conventional dietary supplements (e.g., vitamins, minerals, etc.) and, in 1995, after the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), USP began the development of monographs defining identity and purity standards for many of the best-selling herbs in the U.S. market. From 1995 to 2002, USP has published 86 standards monographs on 25 herbs (Blumenthal, 2003). |

A New Zealand product that contains deep sea shark liver oil and shark cartilage as the active components in a topical cream has been shown to be beneficial in rapidly relieving the itching and more slowly reducing the redness and scaly skin eruptions associated with these disorders. The vitamins A and D, although present in the cream, are at very low levels and vitamin E is present only as an added antioxidant for the oils. |
We can only benefit from the proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals in our foods if we are able to assimilate them into our systems. As a rather extreme example—but nevertheless indicative of the point being made—if we ate a perfectly balanced diet but all the foods were sealed tightly in plastic when we ate them, we would not assimilate any of the goodness of the diet as it would pass straight through undigested. Thus, we need to eat foods that are easily assimilated into our systems in order to benefit from their nutritive, and sometimes therapeutic, properties. |

Despite big improvements in global food supplies since the '60s, more than two billion people, especially women and children, lacked sufficient vitamins and minerals in their diets, particularly vitamin A and iron. In 1990 heads of state at the World Food Summit for Children set a goal of eliminating vitamin A deficiency by the year 2000. Several aid programs were launched to distribute vitamin A capsules, to add iron to wheat flour, and to educate poor people about their diet. But distribution was uneven and often impossible in remote areas. |
The FDA was satisfied with figures provided by the company that the vitamins remained intact.19
Second, the FDA demanded a specific assurance that the genetic engineering process had not caused an increase in the level of toxins through some unexpected effect of inserting the reversed gene. Publicly the company had adopted the corporate mantra that genetic engineering was more "precise" than traditional breeding, and therefore likely to produce a safer product. But the researchers at Calgene knew about the limitations of the theory of precision in genetic engineering. |

Although the adverse effects of frequent, excessive alcohol consumption will not be reversed by the amount of taurine, minerals, and vitamins naturally present in a few capsules of a formulation containing the components referred to here, the unpleasant "morning after" or "hangover" syndrome that can follow even a moderate drinking session will be minimized. More important, however, will be the reduction in damage caused to the liver and brain cells by vitamin and mineral depletion and the long-term effects of this on the body. |

In addition to its rich supply of essential nutrients, maca contains alkaloids, tannins, and saponins.3 See the table on page 340 for a specific nutritional profile of dried maca root.
A chemical analysis conducted in 1981 showed the presence of biologically active aromatic isothiocyanates (a common chemical found in the mustard family of plants and shown to be a wood preservative and insecticide).4 Chemical research shows maca root contains a chemical called p-methoxybenzyl isothio-cyanate, which has reputed aphrodisiac properties. |

The HbS mutation causing sickle-cell anemia cannot be changed. However, nutritional supplements can overcome HbS-related anemia and other nutrient deficiencies, restore normal blood levels of nutrients, and reduce many symptoms of the disease. It is very likely that a nutrient-dense diet, emphasizing fish and fresh vegetables, will also improve health and reduce symptoms.
What You Can Do
Researchers have found that several dietary supplements can lessen the symptoms of sickle-cell anemia. |

Dietary changes that may be helpful
A low-fat diet (with no more than 30 to 40% of calories from fat) is often recommended to help prevent the steatorrhea that often accompanies pancreatic insufficiency.9 In a controlled study of chronic pancreatitis patients, a very low-fat diet resulted in less than one-fourth as much steatorrhea compared to a more typical fat intake.10 Since a very low-fat diet may not be appropriate for a person with malnutrition, this recommendation should only be followed after consulting a healthcare professional. |

Micronutrients include two categories we're all familiar with: vitamins and minerals. The most exciting category of micronutrients and one that you'll hear more and more about in the coming years is phytonutrients. Phytonutrients ("phyto," from the Greek word for plant) are naturally occurring substances that are powerful promoters of human health. SuperFoods Rx provides specific information on phytonutrients and their effect on your health and daily energy.
INTRODUCING PHYTONUTRIENTS
Phytonutrients are nonvitamin, nonmineral components of foods that have significant health benefits. |

He has remained healthy and completely free of cancer for about 15 years!

The primary co-factors are vitamins B3, B6, and C, and the minerals magnesium and zinc. These nutrients are all required by the body, as well, to make prostaglandins.
Thus, though the essential fatty acids are the main dietary factor needed for recovery from degenerative conditions such as cancer, simply ingesting flaxseed oil alone will not work as well as combining the flaxseed oil with foods rich in sulphur-based proteins. In fact, there is some evidence that taking flaxseed oil daily without sufficient sulphur-based proteins in the diet may even be harmful. |

In 1943, some of the nutrients that had been stripped out in processing were added back, including some of the B vitamins and iron, to white flour. In 1998, folic acid was put back in. The lost vitamin E in various forms and the phytonutrients were never returned and, given the complexity of these nutrients, probably could not effectively be added back. Pumpkin seed oil has been used in combination with saw palmetto (page 743) in two double-blind trials to effectively reduce symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (page 58) (BPH).4'5 Only one open label trial evaluated the effectiveness of pumpkin seed oil alone for BPH.6 Animal studies have shown that pumpkin seed extracts can improve the function of the bladder and urethra. This might partially account for BPH symptom relief. |

Nancy Appleton Lick the Sugar Habit white refined flour
Similar to refined sugars, white refined flour is a simple carbohydrate that quickly breaks down into sugar when consumed. Remember the experiment you did as a kid in elementary science class where you took a bite of Saltine cracker, and held it in your mouth to see what would happen? What happened was the taste went from a salty cracker to sweet as sugar within a matter of seconds; the lesson being to demonstrate how quickly white refined flour and refined grains break down into sugar. |

If you drink fruit and vegetable juices, you are drinking distilled water plus certain nutrients such as fruit sugars, organic minerals and vitamins. But if you drink lake, river, well or spring water, you are drinking undistilled water, plus the inorganic minerals that the water has picked up. Some of this water is known as hard water, meaning it has high inorganic mineral concentrations that can cause health problems.
Now, let me give you a short lesson in chemistry. There are two kinds of chemicals - inorganic and organic. |

ASTHMA AND ALLERGIES
What is asthma? It is said people have asthma when they become short of breath, without any warning, to the point of nearly suffocating. Several thousand people die from suffocation due to asthma every year. |
I began using natural supplements with vitamins, herbs, and other natural medical techniques. The natural doctor's advice was to increase my water consumption and decrease my caffeine intake as well. 1 had lost the feeling in my feet, was always tired and achy, depressed, and had little hope.
1 began to drink more water and reduced my caffeine intake somewhat, and by 1995 I began to feel and look much better. Yet 1 was still only consuming a quart to a quart and a half daily, and not flushing all the caffeine out of my system, nor was I using sea salt. |
The color of urine in a dehydrated person (not taking vitamins that could color the urine) will be dark yellow to orange. In a better-hydrated person, the urine is lighter in color.
Children and adults who get asthma attacks with exercise and strenuous effort should always remember to drink water before they begin exercising and to stop drinking caffeine-containing sodas. They should reduce their orange juice intake (if more than two glasses). Because of its high potassium content, too much orange juice can predispose a person to asthma attacks. |
