Don't self-diagnose anemia on the basis of advertising hype for iron-containing tonics or vitamins. There are many different types of anemia, of which iron-deficiency is only one. Taking iron supplements when you don't need them may cause iron deposits that damage the heart, liver, and other organs, and may even increase the risk of heart disease and cancer.
Most of what we eat and digest goes directly to it, for storage (as in the case of glycogen, iron, and all the fat-soluble vitamins) or resynthesis (the production of substances such as cholesterol, hemoglobin, and countless proteins that circulate in the bloodstream). Because it performs so many different and critical roles, when the liver becomes sick, you do too! Some of its ailments are life threatening, many are not. This organ has such great reserves that when you have mal de foie, you may feel nothing more than a little lassitude for a few days.
An ounce and a half of 86-proof whiskey contains 105 "empty" calories, that is, they are without any protein, vitamins, and minerals whatsoever. These empty calories add extra pounds, so if you're having trouble losing weight, cut back on the booze. Chronic alcoholics are often thin and wasted because of poor nutrition, which results in a lack of essential minerals such as zinc, calcium, magnesium, selenium, and potassium, as well as vitamin deficiency.
