But the nutrient profile of the tomato-rich in vitamins A and C, and containing some fiber, too-fits right in with the cancer-prevention recommendations that the National Cancer Institute and other groups have issued based on our current knowledge of how diet affects the disease.
So we suspect that there's nothing odd about the results of this study But we've been tomato fans all our lives-and we've been sold on their heart-healthy benefits for a long time. Like some of our other garden favorites, tomatoes are low in fat and sodium-and rich in potassium. |

Another group was given a potent multivitamin supplement containing megadoses of vitamins, including A, B6, C, and E. This randomized, double-blind study included 65 patients with biopsy-confirmed cancer of the bladder who were already subjects in a randomized trial of immune-boosting BCG (bacillus Calmette-Guerin) therapy (a drug commonly used to treat tuberculosis). After 1 year, the overall tumor recurrence rate was 80% in the RDA group, compared to 40% in the megadose group. |

Constituents of Papaya
The papaya contains an abundance of vitamins and minerals. It also provides enzymes—the most important being papain, which greatly resembles pepsin in its digestive action. The natural papain enzyme is extracted from the papaya, made into tablets, and sold on the market—mainly as an aid for protein digestion.
Chinese Usage of Papaya
After the introduction of papaya into China, the Chinese quickly learned to appreciate the usefulness of the papaya in rendering meat tender, as well as its alimentary and medicinal qualities. |

If you take any of the B vitamins individually, you should also take a B-complex supplement at a different time of day. Take zinc with food to prevent stomach upset. If you take over 30 milligrams of zinc on a daily basis for more than one or two months, you should also take 1 to 2 milligrams of copper each day to maintain a proper mineral balance.

The Failure of Conventional HRT: The Women's Health Study Initiative
Introduction
The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) was designed to provide information about the risks and benefits of conventional hormone replacement therapy. The WHI was a study involving 40 large medical centers around the United States, with 16,608 women. The WHI began in 1996 and was reported in July, 2002.
The WHI was a randomized, placebo controlled study. |
This statement holds true when comparing all natural products to synthetic products, including vitamins, minerals and herbs. It is a common-sense argument to use a natural product to treat disease and promote health, and there are many studies that back up this idea.
Many patients are on synthetic hormones when they first come to my office. Often, just changing them over to natural hormones dramatically improves their condition. Dennis, a 52-year-old CEO of a manufacturing company, had been on Synthroid, a synthetic thyroid hormone, for 10 years. |

As we'll see in subsequent chapters, many vitamins, minerals, and other substances fight aging by acting as free radical scavengers.
Other theories of aging that have been proposed throughout the years are:
Waste Accumulation Theory
In the course of their life spans, cells produce more waste than they can properly dispose of. This waste can include various toxins which when accumulated to a certain level, can interfere with normal cell function, ultimately killing the cell.
Evidence supporting this theory is the presence of a waste product called lipofuscin or age pigment. |
Vitamin A and E are known as "protector nutrients" that have an exceptional ability to aid in recovery from prostate ailments. Both vitamins also play a significant role in sustaining and enhancing the immune system.
Vitamin B6 enhances zinc absorption and helps combat the adverse effects of too much prolactin. Increased prolactin levels in men over 40 can contribute to the development of tumors in the prostate.
Selenium Early research points to a relationship between increased selenium intake and a reduced risk for developing prostate cancer. |
Antioxidants such as vitamins C, E, the mineral selenium, and the amino acid cysteine (see chapters 8 and 9), protect uninfected tissues from damage by superoxide radicals.
Another amino acid that can trigger the release of hGH is ornithine. According to Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw of the Life Extension Newsletter, arginine and ornithine both cause hGH release via the brain's cholinergic nervous system, "the system that uses acetylcholine—made in the brain from the nutrient choline with the help of the cofactor vitamin B5—to transmit information between nerve cells. |
VITAMIN C, E, AND BETA-CAROTENE: THE THREE-WAY ANTIOXIDANT THREAT
If any one of these vitamins has powerful antioxidant properties, the three in combination are even more effective, both in combating aging and in preventing cancer, heart disease, and other diseases.
For example, in the Harvard study of 87,000 female nurses already cited at the beginning of this chapter, women with a high intake of all three antioxidant nutrients had a 54 percent lower risk of stroke. |

Some examples of antioxidants include vitamins C and E. Melatonin has been found to be a much more potent antioxidant than either Vitamin C or E.4
Melatonin has also shown promise as a possible treatment for cancer. A study was conducted observing the effects of daily injections of melatonin given to 54 patients with advanced colon cancer. After two months, the results showed that melatonin appeared to delay the progression of cancer in 44% of the cases. |

It is also a rich source of vitamins A and C.
A gargle or mouth wash prepared from violet leaves is used for inflammation, swelling, and ulceration of the mouth and throat and is also reputed to relieve the pain of cancerous growths, especially in these areas.
Fresh violet leaves are more potent; however if they are not easily obtainable, the dried may be used. Prepare as a strong tea, 6 ounces of the leaves to three pints of boiling water. Cover tightly, remove immediately from the heat, and allow the infusion to stand for twelve hours. Strain. |

How Vitamin E Fights Aging
As do many of the anti-aging vitamins, minerals, and hormones we've covered, vitamin E returns an aging person's immunity to almost youthful levels. Dr. Simin Meydani, a Tufts University nutritional immunologist, administered between 400 and 800 IU of E daily to people over 60. Although their immune responses had been declining, the supplemental E reversed that trend, causing many people's responses to rise back to youthful levels. Dr. Meydani found that the white blood cells that fight infection were up by 10 to 50 percent within 30 days. |

Red Raspberry Leaves: A good source of vitamins A, B, C, G, and E. They are rich in calcium, phosphorus, iron, and an unknown factor that prevents miscarriage. I know of several cases where this was proved beyond a doubt. A woman had four miscarriages, and despaired of ever bearing a child. Several doctors told her that she could never become a mother. On advice given by close members of my family, she took to drinking

Remedial Use of Kelp
Kelp contains an abundance of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. Because of its rich content of iodine, kelp is well-known in many lands as a remedy for preventing or treating goiter. However, some practitioners have reportedly found it to be helpful in normalizing a weak or enlarged prostate gland, and certain other male disorders. For example, Dr. Eric Powell of England says:
The action of kelp on the prostate is to improve the nutrition of the organ and the circulation of the blood through the tissues. |
The oil in fenugreek seeds could possibly account for their ancient reputation as a sex rejuvenator for the animal or man deficient in vitamins A and D. For the past 40 years the damaging effects on the male organs resulting from vitamin A deficiency in the diet have been under scientific study. Experiments on laboratory animals showed marked reduction or complete loss of sperm as a consequence of vitamin A shortage. Scientists in Denmark reported on experiments in which boars were fed a diet low in vitamin A. On this diet the animals' sperm count dropped. |

That's because nutritional supplements, based on vitamins, minerals, herbs, and natural substances such as MSM, are not patentable.
The major impetus behind MSM's growing popularity is word of mouth. As people experience the healing benefits of MSM, we find they often become enthusiastic emissaries eager to tell family members and friends who have pain problems. One such example is Father Sam, a 46-year-old parish priest in rural Pennsylvania. An avid jogger who has also enjoyed lifting weights in the past, he suffered two sports injuries that left him with a bad shoulder and bad knees. |

?Freeze two bottles of water every night—one to take to work and drink as it thaws and one to take in your lunch to keep your food cool and then drink throughout the afternoon. |
For simplicity, we will continue to refer to kilocalories as just calories. vitamins, minerals, and water do not provide calories and cannot truly give us energy even though they are essential for life.
3. Weight gain will occur if you eat more calories than you use. This is called being in a positive energy balance. Weight loss can
65 happen only if you eat fewer calories than your body uses. In other words, if you have a negative energy balance.
4. Fats from plant and animal sources are necessary in small amounts. Your body cannot live without a constant supply of fat. |
This could lead to deficiencies of important vitamins and minerals and could also make you feel hungry or ill because you do not have enough glucose (blood sugar) in your body.
As we have said, the main reason high-protein, very low carbohydrate diets can be dangerous is they may cause your body to make ketones that can be harmful. Ketones are produced when your body uses protein instead of carbohydrates for energy. In large amounts, ketones can damage brain cells and cause the minerals in your blood to be unbalanced, which can be life threatening. |

When you eat something, your digestive process breaks down the food into its component parts: carbohydrates (a combination of carbon and water found in every living thing), protein, vitamins, minerals, fat, and waste.
All of the nutrients pass into your bloodstream, so that your blood can carry them to all of your different body tissues. Anything that can't be used right away is stored, partly as body fat (which is how you gain weight), partly as glycogen, a substance that can be converted into glucose, or blood sugar.
Your body is always striving to keep your blood sugar at a constant level. |

Dog Rose (1) is a shrub with arched, downward-curving branches which are armed with numerous stout hooked prickles. In congenial conditions it may even reach a height of three metres. It grows in scrub, on field boundaries and in hollows from lowland to submontane elevations. Flower-bearing shoots are without prickles. The leaves are alternate and odd-pinnate with three and seven pairs of leaflets. The flowers, which appear from May till July, have five wide-spreading petals and numerous stamens. |

Like iron, vitamin Bi2 and folic acid are essential for the formation of hemoglobin, so a deficiency of either of these vitamins can cause anemia. In the case of vitamin B^2, very little is required for hemoglobin production, so B^-defi-ciency anemia takes much longer to develop than iron-deficiency anemia, up to two years in some cases. Because vitamin B12 is found almost exclusively in foods of animal origin, vegetarians have a higher risk of developing this form of anemia. |

Minerals
Minerals are part of all body tissues and fluids. They are essential in nerve responses, muscle contraction, maintenance of the body's fluid balance, and the internal processing of nutrients. Minerals influence the manufacture of hormones and regulate electrolyte balance throughout the body. The term electrolyte refers to the form in which various minerals circulate in the body. Calcium, potassium, and sodium are examples of important electrolytes. |

Preventing Stress Ulcers • Merrill S. Chernov, M.D., of Phoenix, Arizona, has reported that injections of vitamin A can be effective in preventing gastroduodenal ulceration in the severely burned patient. He found that serum levels of vitamin A dropped drastically in the burned patient, probably due in large part to the fact that the patient with severe burns is losing great amounts of protein, and protein is necessary to mobilize vitamin A out of the liver. |
Extra calcium and vitamins A and C with bioflavonoids will also help. If you have a cavity, there is no alternative to having it filled.
Eating yogurt or acidophilus culture may help bad breath, and one woman told us that after suffering from "bad breath and a terrible taste in my mouth for over 20 years," and having tried mouthwashes and "all kinds of treatments," the problem disappeared shortly after she began taking 50 milligrams of niacinamide. |
With regard to nutrients, other work I have seen suggests that some people may be helped by vitamins A and D. In general, do not take more than about 20,000 I.U. of vitamin A a day or more than 400 I.U. of vitamin D.
Cold Air Triggers Attacks
Anyone who has asthma should be aware that cold weather often brings on attacks. The emergency room of a hospital in New York City once plotted on a graph the number of cases of acute asthma attacks treated, and a dramatic spike was evident in the month of January. If the option is available, then, consider moving to a warmer climate. |
