Many studies have found, for example, that children with higher intakes of B vitamins and other brain-active micro-nutrients do better in school than those children whose diets are lower in these nutrients. Others studies have found that children who are exposed to heavy metals (such as lead, cadmium, or mercury) through their food, air, or water have reduced learning and memory, and impaired functioning of the central nervous system. |

THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL OF THEM ALL
Based in Houston, Texas, Stanislaw Burzynski, M.D., is probably the most controversial figure in the world of cancer today. The American Cancer
Society considers his treatment of "highest concern," and wants him stopped at almost any cost. |

Does this mean that the vitamins sold in the store that are made out of ground up rocks and shells, iron filings, and acdvated sewage sludge are natural substances that are going to heal our bodies? How do we think that a substance which can kill children in an overdose (synthedc iron tablets) is something healthy for us? Does natural mean the caterpillar fungus, the tuberculosis-filled lung dssue, and spider parts that some homeopathic medicines are made from will heal our bodies? Natural doesn't seem to mean anything anymore. I even see pharmaceutical drugs with the label "natural" on them! |
She was given the traditional chocolate, vanilla and strawberry-flavored "nutritional" canned shake and told that it was good for her because it had vitamins in it. Also, it contained refined sugar and processed dairy products - just full of poison. Great, now she's going to have to take sugar every few hours for the rest of her life.
When the blood sugar hits that low, as many diabetics can tell you when they accidentally take too much insulin, people begin to get confused; they can even pass out. The brain cannot run on any other fuel than glucose (a sugar). |
When I first came onto the rotation, she told me there had been another medical student who had rotated through this department who believed in vitamins and health food, and that she thought it was a load of crap. I think she even used those words, coarse in her manner as well as with her words. She rather growled at me, "You're not one of those health food freaks, are you?" I pushed back her verbal assault with a quick, yet timid "no" and changed the subject to a current psychiatric patient on the ward. She thought she could win by intimidation. |
One thing I did learn, was that as soon as I would say the words "natural," "vitamins," or "healing foods" to a medical doctor, he would automatically stop listening and try to get me to stop doing whatever natural, nonsensical, unscientific, un-proven quackery that I was doing.
I went home that evening, got out the carrots, turned on the juicer, and I decided to make extra ounces of carrot juice every day to drink just for him. There has never been a single person hurt by carrot juice, only healed. |

As science uncovers the secrets of physiologically valuable food substances other than common vitamins and minerals, it may become routine to expect more from food. Enriching foods in the future may mean incorporating pharmacological manipulations to bolster human defenses against various diseases, including infections. The distinction between foods and drugs grows fainter.

Supplementary vitamins and other essential nutrients also often help. A number of double-blind placebo-controlled studies have found that the frequency of antisocial behavior in juveniles is lowered significantly by appropriate supplementation.44
One remarkable double-blind, placebo-controlled study actually compared Ritalin directly with vitamin b6. Published in 1979 in the Journal of Biological Psychiatry, this study found that high doses of vitamin b6 actually did a better job than Ritalin at reducing hyperactivity.4 |

The fructose in fruits is diluted with water, vitamins, and fiber and does not cause these health problems.
• When fructose is in excess of 20 percent of the total calories in our diets, it also mighr raise blood triglyceride, cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol levels, rhus increasing the risk for heart disease.
• Fructose won't raise brain serotonin levels, so don't expect to get a mood boost from this sugar.
The bottom line is that eating fruit and a little honey is one way to avoid the blood-sugar roller coaster produced by most processed sweets and desserts. |

But some of the patients reported that they did not feel well as the vitamins dripped in; some were irritable, or sad, or anxious. Something was still not right even though they gained temporary relief from the allergy or the infection. I did not know how to individualize the mixtures. How much of each ingredient? If the mixture was helpful, how often should it be repeated? What would be the long-term effects? I was unsure when to call a halt, or when to suggest a return visit. "You're well. Come back as needed." Many of them did not come back. |
I used the B-complex shots on these children to get the digestive enzymes to restart their function. The vitamins by mouth could not work, as they passed right on out the other end before they could be absorbed by the damaged intestinal lining cells. The transit time from mouth to anus was just too rapid to allow for any significant absorption and subsequent benefit. The shots stopped the diarrhea almost overnight. (I continued them every other day for about seven to ten days.) I produced a physiological effect; it was not a psychological response. |
He might place vials of different foods, toxins, drugs, vitamins, minerals, or amino acids near or on the client, and the muscle being tested will become weak or strong depending upon whether the substance is damaging or beneficial to the client. It sounds strange, but the results can be validated because they are reproducible. Kinesiologists have been able to find by testing and "asking" the body about its responses, what a particular person needs. |

Restless Legs Syndrome
After you've been running all day, the last thing you want your gams to do is the cha-cha—especially while you're trying to sleep. But that's what happens to people who suffer from restless legs syndrome, which causes an irresistible urge to thrash about, usually within 30 minutes after going to bed.

Haas. "And vitamins and minerals are in their natural state in foods, not in supplements."
"It's like taking a fiber supplement. It may be better than not having any fiber, but you're always better off eating high-fiber foods than taking a supplement," adds Dr. Stern. "Once you take the fiber out of a food, the fiber is dehydrated, it doesn't represent all of the types of fiber in foods, and it may not work the same way."
Another problem with supplements: Exposure to air and light has a detrimental effect, so each time you open the bottle, the pills get weaker. |

That eight-ounce glass of carrot juice packs a nutritional wallop of important vitamins, with more than ten times the Recommended Dietary Allowance of vitamin A and as much vitamin C as two bananas.
What juices can't provide, though, is fiber—at least not the 20 to 35 grams that adults need each day. Our eight-ounce glass of carrot juice contains a meager 2 grams of fiber, compared with the 14 grams in the pound of carrots that it takes to make a cup of juice. Fiber is essential for healthy digestion and may even help prevent certain types of cancer. |

The only truly natural vitamins are those that come from foods. They are available in nutritional supplements as:
• highly nutritious, concentrated foods (such as bee pollen);
• powdered concentrates of foods and herbs with the moisture removed (as in barley-juice powder); and
• an isolated component of a food (wheat germ, for example).
Herbs are becoming an increasingly popular natural way to cleanse, nourish, and strengthen the body to maintain good health. |
Frozen peas, after processing and cooking, are left with about 17 percent of the original vitamins. White flour loses up to ninety nutrients by milling, and only six nutrients are artificially added to "enrich" it.
Research suggests that a primary contributing factor to many of our modern diseases is our eating of processed, low-fiber, low-nutrition foods. The fruit contains large amounts of vitamins (A, B, C), about two to three times as much as an orange (Arvigo and Balick 1994, 121*).
Effects
Animal experiments using a leaf extract demonstrated a distinct morphinelike effect as a result of inhibition of acetylcholine release (cf. morphine). This effect was likely produced by the quercetin contained in the leaves (Lutterodt 1989 and 1992, 152). The active constituent does not appear to bind to the opioid receptors and is not thought to have any "addictive potential" (Lutterodt and Maleque 1988, 225). |
