Sulfur also has a long history of healing but it has been overlooked in our current fascination with vitamins and minerals. When asked to think of minerals important for health, most people know that calcium is good for their bones, that iron is important for their blood, that zinc is needed by the prostate. But rarely does anyone mention sulfur.
In the next chapter we will look at the MSM's "pedigree" and its connection to DMSO and sulfur. |

Salt water is an old standby for colds, cough, and flu. Use it in these two ways: sniffed up each nostril (dissolve a half-teaspoon of salt in a half-glass of water), and as a gargle to soothe a throat made raw from coughing. (Dissolve 1 tablespoon in a glass of water.)

Garlic aficionados will be particularly pleased to learn about garlic's special healing powers. Garlic's health benefits range from thinning blood and lowering cholesterol to fighting infection and even cancer. A French researcher claims a substance in garlic promotes release of the neurotransmitter serotonin, producing a calming effect. |

Sandy's mother had to pull her out of school because she was having such a difficult time concentrating. "I feel miserable most of the time. My muscles ache and I always have some form of a headache. |

Many people think, and some conservative nutritionists would agree with them, that eating a balanced diet provides all the vitamins they need. This is simply not so. Everyone's idea of a balanced diet, even among experts, is different, and it may vary greatly from the scientifically based recommendations of a contemporary nutritionist or nutritionally oriented physician. |

That means they have a high proportion of nutrition—fiber, vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates—for the few calories supplied. The diversity of these vegetables enhances their health merit. To almost all of the twenty-plus vegetables listed above, add variations on the theme; of the lettuces, for example, no fewer than eighty-seven varieties were listed as far back as 1885 in a U.S. government agricultural report.
The variety—from bland cauliflower to tart mustard greens, from chewy turnips to crunchy romaine lettuce—ensures that there is something here for every palate. |
They also add vitamins, potassium, calcium, and numerous phytochemical fighters for heart, lung, and intestinal health. As if that weren't recommendation enough, broccoli rabe requires less cooking than broccoli. My favorite rabe preparation is to cut it into pieces, rinse, and add to hot olive oil in which several cloves of garlic have been browned. Stir the vegetable in the oil, add a small bit of water, cover, then steam for several minutes—a marvelous side dish.
The turnip is really two vegetables, a root crucifer and a leafy green. |
They contain vitamins, are high in fiber, and have small amounts of protein. Mostly, sea vegetables are a rich source of such minerals as potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and iodine. Kathie Swift says that even a few flakes sprinkled into a bean chili or soup can boost your mineral intake dramatically. She cites the example of a client who was taking in only 1400 calories per day but had a vitamin and mineral content well above most other diets at that calorie level. The nutritional superstar was the sea vegetables she used daily. |

Now the FDA is expanding its role into treatments not generally considered to be drugs, such as vitamins and nutritional supplements, and also into medical devices.
Doctors who fear the OSHA inspector, who is armed with a manual for assessing fines, had better be even more certain not to cross the FDA. The FDA uses guns.

A rich source of antioxidants, cayenne contains vitamins A, C, and E and other substances that help protect the body against harmful free radicals, which are oxygen compounds that can damage cell membranes. Experimental research shows that cayenne reduces blood cholesterol (especially harmful low-density lipoprotein [LDL] cholesterol levels) and triglycerides, possibly by decreasing cholesterol absorption in the intestines and by increasing its excretion through the bile. |
Today, herbs, as well as vitamins and minerals, are classified as dietary supplements in the United States.
The Introduction of DSHEA
The FDA and the U.S. herb industry have locked horns repeatedly during the past 30 years. In 1994, the U.S. Congress unanimously passed a bill called the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), which defined dietary supplements and forbade the FDA from treating them as food chemicals or drugs unless manufacturers made drug claims for their products. |
Major Constituents
Capsaicin; vitamins A, C, and E
Safety
Cayenne is generally recognized as safe for use (GRAS) by the FDA and has a long history of consumption as a food. Wash hands thoroughly after applying capsaicin creams, and do not apply additional heat. When handling fresh hot peppers, use gloves to protect your skin from capsaicin's irritating, non-water-soluble effects. Since it is oil soluble, capsaicin can be removed from the skin using a cloth dipped in vegetable oil or a vinegar bath.
• Side effects: When applied topically, capsaicin often causes a temporary burning sensation. |
Major Constituents
Alliin, alliinase (depending on preparation, breakdown products include allicin and other thiosulfinates, diallyl sulfide and other allyl sulfides, ajoene, vinyl dithiins, S-allyl-cysteine, S-allyl-mercaptocysteine, and many other sulfur-containing compounds); amino acids; glycosides; vitamins; minerals; trace elements, including selenium and germanium
Safety
Garlic has a long history of safe use as a food. Garlic supplements have an excellent safety record and are well tolerated by most people. |

As you will see, I am not against vitamins in reasonable amounts as a supplement to the diet. However, they are not an excuse for continuing to eat an unhealthy diet.
Genes and Diets: Why Are You at Risk?
Not all of us are alike. Some can smoke, drink, and eat whatever they want with no apparent harm. In this book you will learn about human genetics and why I believe so many of us will not be quite so lucky as to emerge from the American diet unscathed. For much of man's existence on earth, food was scarce. The only way to get enough calories was to eat pounds of plant foods. |

Researchers believe the vitamins, which are antioxidants, squelch free radical action. Previous research has found that high cholesterol levels interact with oxygen in the body to produce an excess of oxygen-free radicals. These are known to interfere with nitric oxide and cause blood vessels to be less pliable. This impairment of blood vessels is a recognized risk factor for atherosclerosis.
Smoking Solutions

They contain fiber and provide more vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber per calorie than simple sugar. Be wary of such processed foods as white bread. Refining removes much of the nutritive value. Opt, instead, for whole grains. In general, get 50 to 60 percent of your total calories from carbohydrates.
Despite what you may have heard, how quickly glucose gets into your body depends not only on the type of carbohydrates you've eaten, but on several factors, including:
• Amount eaten.
• How foods are cooked or prepared
• Other foods eaten at the same time. |

The results of one study suggest that grape seed is more effective than vitamins C and E in protecting smokers against cell damage caused by tobacco-induced free radicals. This is good news, in light of the fact that roughly one-third of all cancers in the United States are tobacco-related.12 Research also indicates that grape seed's antioxidant activity helps protect against UV damage, giving it a possible role to play in preventing skin cancer and premature aging.13

The clinic also offers a multitude of supportive treatments, including vitamins, yeast, garlic, and a host of other natural medicines. The list changes as Mildred learns about new developments, and she is perpetually experimenting with new treatments that she hopes may help.

Sitting back in her reclining office chair, she squinted with a fierce gaze, exhibiting the no-nonsense gravity of someone who sees a lot of serious illness. "Probably the greatest success comes with the patient's attitude. |
They gave me the tonic and vitamins, and told me to keep taking it and to call them back and let them know how I was doing. That was in April. Around August, a friend of ours thought we ought to get a second opinion, so we went to our local doctor, a skin doctor, and he said that it was melanoma cancer. So he suggested I see Doctor X, a surgeon, and have it surgically removed. We asked Dr. X if there was any way we could take it off just locally by putting any salve or taking any tonic. He said, 'No way. There's no way but surgery. If you don't go into surgery, you're not going to live long. |
Gerson used an elaborate program of natural foods and fresh juices grown without synthetic chemicals, along with liver injections, potassium iodide, and a sophisticated course of vitamins and mineral supplements. The diet was low in salt, fat, and animal protein and high in carbohydrates and fresh organic fruits and vegetables. (Dr. Gerson adamantly opposed the use of chemical fertilizers.) It eliminated meat, milk, alcohol, and canned or bottled foods, and forbade smoking. Dr. Gerson claimed a documented success rate of around 30 percent with terminal cancer patients. |
In a 1994 study on the effects of vitamin megadoses on the recurrence of bladder cancer, patients with cancer who received only the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals experienced a tumor recurrence rate of 91 percent. Those who got the megadoses had a recurrence rate of just 41 percent.16

Step 2: Improve The Diet
The second step in a detoxification program is eating healthy foods that provide vitamins and minerals that aid the body in the detoxification process. I refer the reader to Chapter 6, which provides information on how to properly balance the diet with adequate amounts of protein, fat and carbohydrates.
In order to detoxify your body, it is necessary to reduce (or better yet, eliminate) refined sugar from the diet. Refined sugar contains no nutrients and when eaten in excess will lead to excess obesity and liver dysfunction. |

Tomatoes are also, of course, rich in vitamins A and C; they contain some fiber; they offer minerals, especially potassium; and they weigh in at about 30 calories per tomato.
When shopping for tomatoes, from cherry tomatoes to the beefsteaks, look for smooth, plump, fragrant specimens. Do not buy them from a refrigerated case, and never refrigerate less than ripe tomatoes once you get them home; cold retards the ripening process. Less than ripe tomatoes will ripen at home in due course. |
