Codex directives are currently seeking to eliminate all vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and most other supplements as free-trade items. They are seeking to reclassify all these supplements as pharmaceuticals...to be bought, sold, traded, and regulated by the pharmaceutical industry. In an earlier chapter, we mentioned that this restriction on the supplement tryptophan had occurred in the U.S. When tryptophan became a "pharmaceutical" product instead of a "supplement" or "nutriceutical," the price increased tenfold.

Chronic disease is the backbone of the pharmaceutical industry. |
Less obvious, though, is that many staples such as bread, milk, and pastas have been supplemented with vitamins. Doesn't it make you wonder what has gone wrong in the growing, harvesting, and production of our foodstuffs that our government permits/requires supplementation? More remarkable, though, is that these added supplements are of little value in the overall nutritional picture.

Within a year, that approval extended to liquids and vitamins.
On October 12, 1987, United Press International reported that more than ten American government officials who had been involved in the decision to approve aspartame were now working in the private sector with or for the aspartame industry. One of them was Commissioner Hayes, who had gone to work for Burton-Marsteller, the chief public relations firm representing Searle and Monsanto. (Monsanto purchased Searle in 1985. In this merger, Searle's aspartame business became a separate Monsanto subsidiary, the NutraSweet Company. |
Still, German magazines regularly featured ads for products free of tobacco and other "genetic poisons" such as alcohol, along with products like vitamins and nutritional compounds that were touted for their ability to strengthen the gene pool.67 News stories warned that nicotine passed from inhaled smoke through the lungs into the blood and fat, ending up in breast milk. Tobacco was thought to destroy the ability to make healthy babies or even limit the capacity to have children. |

Minerals in general rule over other nutrients because vitamins, enzymes and amino acids, as well as fats and carbohydrates, require them for activity. There are seventeen minerals that are considered essential in human nutrition and if there is a shortage of just one the balance of the entire system can be upset. A deficiency of a single mineral can negatively impact the entire chain of life, rendering other nutrients ineffective and useless.

Real food— whole food with minimal processing—contains a virtual pharmacy of nutrients, phytochemicals, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, antiinflammatories, and healthful fats, and can keep you alive and thriving into your tenth decade.
And remember, how you eat is as important as what you eat. Mindfulness and consciousness in eating—like in everything else in life—contribute to health and well-being.
Whether you're driving a car, building a relationship of love and support, or eating a meal, paying attention actually makes a difference.

A decreased ability to absorb vitamin B12 or folate or niacin or vitamins C or E may mean an increased risk of neurological deficit or damage from free radicals.
Figure %3 (kit Reaction Peristalsis (or squeezing of the intestines) is stimulated by nerves that are regulated by a serotonin-type chemical. When all is working correctly, serotonin reduces the discomfort we may feel when gas passes through and stimulates more neurons to contract in a coordinated fashion to move our food along. Using laxatives can overstimulate the intestinal nerves and lead to chronic constipation.

On top of all its phytochemical power, cabbage is a darn good source of everyday vitamins and minerals. It contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin K, beta-carotene, and even a little of the eye-healthy carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin. And let's not forget the fiber. One cup of the cooked stuff gives you almost 4 g of fiber (one cup raw gives you 2 g). All this in one of the lowest-calorie foods on the planet. worth knowing
Many members of the cabbage family contain goitrogens, naturally occurring substances that may interfere with the function of the thyroid gland. |
Those vitamins also help reduce inflammation, and may help protect the brain from the kinds of age-related declines we often see in brain function. In fact, one study in the May 2005 issue of the Journal of Experimental Neurology showed that rats fed diets enriched with spinach and blueberries lost a lot fewer brain cells after a stroke and recovered significantly more than rats that weren't eating the spinach and blueberry-enriched diets. |

Unlike most vitamins, vitamin D can be made by the body itself. (Generally speaking, a vitamin is an organic compound that an animal needs to survive but can usually obtain only from outside the body.) We make vitamin D by converting something else that, like the sun, has been getting a bad rap lately, but is 100 percent necessary for survival—cholesterol.
Cholesterol is required to make and maintain cell membranes. It helps the brain to send messages and the immune system to protect us against cancer and other diseases. |
In fact, they were given a combination of compounds that is a variation on the prenatal vitamins given to pregnant women today—vitamin B12, folic acid, betaine, and choline.
The results rocked the genetic world. Fat yellow female mice that had mated with fat yellow male mice had thin brown babies. That seemed to throw everything the scientific community understood about heredity up in the air. A genetic examination of the brown baby mice only added to the mystery. Their genes were the same as their parents'. |
These vitamins have a lot to recommend them—as we mentioned a few chapters ago, folic acid is very important during pregnancy. Study after study has shown that folic acid supplements reduce birth defects that can cause damage to a developing brain or spinal cord. The connection is so strong that the government required grains to be fortified with folic acid much as drinking water is fortified with fluoride. And there's been a corresponding decrease in diseases, such as spina bifida, that are related to folic acid deficiency in pregnant women. |

Needed supplements: Take calcium (1,000 mg), magnesium (250-500 mg), potassium (100 mg), vitamins C (1,000 mg), Bj (320 mg), and B6 (10-25 mg) and zinc (25 mg).
Potassium-sparing Diuretics: amiloride (Midamor), spironolactone (Aldactone), and triamterene (Dyrenium)
Because they preserve levels of the mineral potassium in the body, these medicines may be prescribed alone or with another diuretic to prevent potassium levels from falling too low—a dangerous imbalance called hypokalemia. |
They deplete phosphorus, zinc, vitamins Bn and D, and calcium. They have been linked to higher risk of osteoporosis. Calcium-containing antacids can (rarely) cause high calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia), which is very dangerous. Lowered stomach acid also can decrease folic acid absorption. |

Eggs contain many other nutrients that are good for you—protein, some polyunsaturated fats, folic acid, and other B vitamins. As Dr. Walter Willett, chairman of the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, has said, "No research has ever shown that people who eat more eggs have more heart attacks than people who eat few eggs."
The second point has to do with the demonization of saturated fat in general. Yes, saturated fat raises cholesterol, but it raises both the good and the bad cholesterol. |

THE RESEARCH
Reviewing the data from 3,600 cases of medication mistakes in young children, researchers discovered that approximately 42% had ingested common over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, including vitamins, and 39-2% had accidentally taken prescription drugs. The remaining children had ingested a combination of drugs or an unknown medication.
Any medicine is a potential poison.

What I worry about is that we're getting one-third of our calories from foods that contribute no vitamins and minerals. Because people are eating all that junk, a large proportion of Americans are undernourished," adds Dr. Block, whose findings were published in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis.
"Yes, you can actually be obese and undernourished," explains Dr. Block, noting that taking in nutrient-lacking foods contributes to the development of most chronic diseases. Here's what folks surveyed consumed, listed in order of popularity:

Or, to put it another way, your body's metabolism gets ramped up on refined carbs because you're putting in a bunch of low-quality fuel that has no vitamins, nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants."
How are processed grains similar to low-grade fuel? Well, those refined carbs are turned into glucose more quickly, meaning that your body doesn't need to work so hard to break down and digest them, because, as Dr. Wil-lett has explained, machinery has already done the work for you during processing. |
They provide vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. They tend to be more filling and satisfying. They're more slowly metabolized so you don't have rapid blood sugar swings. And they have fiber, which could help prevent cancer and other diseases."
Cutting or Curtailing Carbs Could Take Off Your Weight
In recent years, researchers have been discovering that the excessive intake of these fast-acting carbs could be a primary cause of the rise in numbers on your bathroom scale.
Nutritionist Dr. Lieberman explains why. |
Problem is, the new drinks have even more calories and sugar, and are marginally better than soda only because Snapple has added vitamins and trace amounts of other nutrients," Burros wrote. Besides, she argued, nutritionists "have long cautioned that children should not drink more than 4 to 12 ounces of juice a day, depending on their age, because it has a lot of sugar and calories without the fiber found in whole fruit and, with the exception of orange and grapefruit juice, not much else."
Indeed, "the bottom line is that the Snapple drinks are basically sugar water. |
We've known for some time that eating certain foods, particularly those containing the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E can help protect against damage from free radicals," Dr. Dandona says. "But our studies established for the first time that if you take sugar, you will get an increase in free radical generation. The free radicals are highly reactive, interacting with other cells and damaging them."

The FDA was satisfied with figures provided by the company that the vitamins remained intact.19
Second, the FDA demanded a specific assurance that the genetic engineering process had not caused an increase in the level of toxins through some unexpected effect of inserting the reversed gene. |

THE SECOND STUDY
In the Heart Outcomes Prevention Evaluation (HOPE) 2 study, researchers gave more than 5,500 patients who had diabetes or vascular disease supplements of folic acid and vitamins B-6 and B-12, or a placebo.
During the five years of the study, homocysteine levels dropped significantly among those receiving the supplements, but this did not translate into a significantly reduced risk of death from heart disease or heart attack.
There did, however, appear to be a slight reduction in the number of people who had a stroke among those taking the supplements, the researchers report. |

Take 500 mg -1 g of vitamin C a day, and add zinc and vitamins A and E to your diet. Take 4 g of EPA DHA (an omega-3 fat) fish oil a day in a 3:2 ratio.
Diet: Eliminating dairy products from your diet usually decreases the symptoms of the allergic reaction. Other common allergens are spices, yeast products, and gluten.
Medication: Topical nasal steroids such as Flonase®, oral antihistamines, topical azelastine, or cromolyn sodium in combination with mucolytics (guaifenesin) and decongestants are usually prescribed. Although they do mask symptoms, they do not alleviate the actual cause. |
Chromium, zinc, and the B complex of vitamins, particularly thiamine, also appear to play a role in preventing and treating glaucoma. Those with elevated eye pressure have been found deficient in these elements. Anyone at risk should consider taking the following supplements: 100 meg of trivalent chromium C5 twice a day; 30 mg of zinc a day; and 50 mg of B complex a day.
Herbs: Bilberry contains flavonoids that support eye structure and function. Take 160 mg twice a day for 25% anthocyanosides (the active ingredient of the herb). |
