Hete's what the research says about adding vitamins and minerals to your sun protection regimen.
The Vitamin C Solution
Vitamin C is well-known for its role as a collagen (skin tissue) buildet when used topically. It's also a pretty imptessive sun protectant, say the experts. But don't get it confused with sunscreen, says John C. Murray, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at Duke Univetsity Medical Centet in Durham, North Carolina. Vitamin C creams can't absotb ultraviolet rays. |

Besides, fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, and other minimally processed foods supply more than just vitamins and minerals. They are Mother Nature's best sources of fiber and thousands of phytochemicals that you can't get from supplements. The bottom line: Follow the Origin Diet and supplement responsibly. Here's how.
SUPPLEMENTS 101
Where do you start? With a multiple, of course! But, even here you must separate the diamonds from the stones. Look for:

Though there's not a lot of research on the use of vitamins and minerals in treating Raynaud's, many of them influence blood flow. Also, some people with the disorder have been found to be deficient in these nutrients.
ž Inositol hexanicotinate. This form of niacin won't cause skin flushing, as other forms can. Two studies involving people with Raynaud's have shown a positive effect. One study found that a dose of 4,000 milligrams per day during cold weather reduced Raynaud's attacks. |

Arabinogalactan: Another polysaccharide, arabinogalactan, is commonly found in nature in carrots, radishes, pears, black beans, corn, wheat, red wine, tomatoes, and coconuts. Several herbs already mentioned in this book also contain arabinogalactans, such as Echinacea purpurea, Baptista tinctoria, and Curcuma longa. |

The pet food industry must "fortify" its products with vitamins and minerals to make sure the food is nutritious, since many nutrients are destroyed during the manufacturing process. In fact, much of the ingredients in pet foods are leftovers from the human food industry—food deemed not fit for human consumption. And yet, we are told by the pet food industry not to feed table scraps to our pets

The liver is intricately involved in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism, in storage of vitamins and minerals, and in many essential physiological processes. For example, the liver helps control blood sugar levels and hormone levels. It synthesizes proteins (such as plasma albumin, fibrinogen, and most globulins), lipids, and lipoproteins (phospholipids, cholesterol) as well as bile acids that are excreted in the detoxification process.
Detoxification is an essential part of the body's metabolism, and the liver plays a key role in this process. |
Grains are high in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin E complex. Grains that have been used include whole wheat bulgar, kasha, stone-ground corn meal, brown and wild rice, millet, quinoa, amaranth, whole rye, and steel-cut oats. I prefer to add sprouted wheat grass, barley, and other sprouted grains, all of which are high in vitamins and enzymes.

Into this class would fall vitamins and minerals, but that doesn't mean that products enriched with a long list of these ingredients are necessarily a good buy. Supplementing the diet should not be dictated by the formulation of a cereal manufacturer, which may be something less than rational, is always incomplete, and is often overpriced.
There are two types of food chemicals for which every effort should be made to minimize intake. One of these is the nitrosamines and the other, an equally formidable and only recently recognized carcinogen, is malonaldehyde. |

These consumers use herbs, vitamins and minerals, essential oils, and other techniques, first, because they work, and second, because they dovetail with people's values about health and life.
Herb sales have exploded in recent years, with consumers spending more than $3 billion annually on herbal remedies. And consumers are not the only ones increasingly interested in herbal medicine. Many of today's physicians and medical students are using herbs as well, with good results. Not long ago, only a handful of medical schools even broached the subject of alternative therapies. |
The liver assists in the digestion and metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, the storage and production of some vitamins and minerals, and the manufacture of a wide variety of proteins and immune substances. The liver makes glycogen out of sugar and then stores it. Glycogen can be converted into glucose, or blood sugar, when the body needs it. Because of its production of bile, the liver contributes not only to elimination of drugs and toxins but also to the absorption of fats and the fat-soluble vitamins. |

Nutrients That Ease the Sneeze
Aller gies are versatile. They can show up just about anywhere in your body and create an incredible variety of symptoms. They can affect your nose, eyes, throat, lungs, stomach, skin and nervous system. They can make you itch, wheeze and sneeze, make your nose run and your eyes weep, give you a headache or a bellyache and even bring on fatigue and depression. |

Adding large doses of purified vitamins and minerals will generally fail to overcome these problems.
The key to total nutrition is a balanced diet. Herbs are useful as a part of the balanced diet and also as an aid in remedying a long-term nutritional deficiency. This is done in two ways:
1. the tonic herbs improve the assimilation of vital nutrients by the organs (sometimes referred to as a "Yang tonic");
2. the nutritive herbs provide substantial amounts of balanced minerals and vitamins in a form that is easy to assimilate (sometimes referred to as "Yin tonics"). |

In nature, there is an interrelationship between various vitamins and minerals, and they all play a synergistic role with one another for optimum health. For example, selenium always appears with vitamin E complex in foods and functions as an activator of the complex. There are other important nutrients that cooperate with vitamin E complex; they include vitamins A, C, K, B6, and B12 folic acid; pantothenic acid; zinc; iron; and essential fatty acids. This is another good reason to get your nutrients from foods or food concentrates and not from fractionated vitamin pills. |

Lee was branded a racketeer because he promoted whole, natural, unadulterated foods with their vitamins and minerals intact. When he designed digestive aids with enzymes and calcium products to replace the loss of the minerals through processing and sugarized diets, he was branded a faddist and extremist who was duping the public. The tragedy of my parents' generation is that they grew up listening to Betty Crocker instead of Royal Lee. His work was condemned as dangerous to the public. Eat a variety of foods to obtain the vitamins and minerals your body needs. Avoid taking any supplements that exceed the recommended daily allowances.
• Limit salt intake. Consume no more than 2,400 milligrams a day (an amount that roughly corresponds to about a teaspoonful of salt). Cut down on salt in food preparation and do not add it to foods at the table. Because many processed foods (lunch meats, canned and commercially prepared soups, fast foods, frozen meals, and cheese) contain large amounts of sodium, consume these sparingly.
• Maintain an adequate calcium intake. |

Remember that booze is high in calories but devoid of vitamins and minerals. Stop using tobacco in any form! Garlic protects laboratory animals against cancer and may do so in humans too. The same kind of bioflavonoids present in anticancer foods such as brussels sprouts and cauliflower are among the many ingredients of garlic thus far identified.
How much dietary fiber should you eat? I suggest at least 35 grams a day, but check it out with your own doctor first, especially if you have any problems with your intestinal tract. Don't be carried away when you embark on a high-fiber diet. |

Unless enzymes function properly, vitamins and minerals cannot do their job. Before fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K can be broken down, for example, they need the enzyme lipase. Otherwise, they are partially flushed out of the body. Abundant enzymes are found in raw foods, especially juices. But to increase enzyme levels further, they can be taken as supplements, and again, the crystalloid form is recommended.
Antioxidant enzymes are produced naturally by the body, and include superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione, and catalase. |
Tests can indicate, for instance, whether the adrenal glands are producing enough antiaging hormones, whether vitamins and minerals are being properly digested, and whether toxic metals are polluting the system. Findings may reveal that one person is anemic due to an iron deficiency, for example, while another is low in folic acid. Results help holistic health practitioners address the unique needs of their patients.
Once you begin a health regimen, subsequent testing shows how well recommendations are taking effect, and adjustments are made accordingly. |
