After evaluating her, I placed her on vitamins and minerals with IV vitamin therapies. I also started treatment with the IV antibiotic Clindamyacin, along with natural hormones: natural thyroid (Chapter 4), DHEA, natural progesterone and natural testosterone (Chapter 5). She quickly came out of the Herxheimer Reaction. "After starting the IV treatments, I finally felt like the fight was over. I quickly put the wheelchair away, as I no longer needed it, " Patti said. After one year of this treatment, Patti only complained of pain in her knees. |
Eating food that is lacking proper nutrients or that has been contaminated by chemicals, forces our body to use its own store of vitamins and minerals to properly digest the food. This will cause the body to become depleted of these items and may contribute to a poorly functioning immune system.
Vitamins
Vitamins are organic substances found in food that are necessary in small amounts to maintain the body's metabolism and to promote a healthy hormonal system and a strong immune system. There are over fifty vitamins known today. |
Modern food processing has stripped valuable vitamins and minerals from food. Examples of foods that have been stripped of their nutrients include refined flour, refined sugar and partially hydrogenated oils.
3. Fruits and vegetables have been contaminated by the widespread use of pesticides. The antibiotics and hormones given to animals are another source of contamination. These contaminated foods cause oxidative damage in the body.
When we eat food rich in nutrients, the body will use these nutrients to aid in digestion. |
In order for the immune system to be optimally functioning, the body must have adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals. Also, the hormonal system must be properly balanced. Eating healthy food to nourish the immune system is a must. Finally, toxins must be removed from the body. All of these items are covered in much more depth in Chapters 3-11.
How To Diagnose a Mycoplasma Infection
There are many different ways to isolate a bacterium. The "gold standard" for diagnosing a bacterial infection is to culture (i.e., grow) the bacteria. |
I frequently find people with chronic disorders to be allergic (or sensitive) to various vitamins and minerals. Unless these allergies are fully cleared, the patients will often have a sub-optimal response to any therapy. George was cleared of an allergy to calcium and dairy products, and he immediately improved. "Within one day of the NAET treatment my energy level shot up, and my joint pain almost totally went away. Eating those foods containing calcium, as well as taking calcium pills, probably made my condition worse. All I know is that I feel tremendously better after going through NAET. |

Because caffeine is a diuretic, too much of it can wash out the body's vitamins and minerals. In addition, excessive caffeine intake has been found to result in a reduction of the body's supply of calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
Caffeinated beverages, especially coffee, have also been known to enhance gastric acid secretion and aggravate ulcers. |
Has that orange been laced with chemical agents or pesticides? Many vitamins and minerals are not prevalent in the diet, specifically coenzyme Q10, vital to people suffering from cardiovascular problems. Though coenzyme Q10 is abundant in beef heart, pork, mackerel, and sardines, not many of us thrive on that particular diet. Additional complications exist for those on antibiotics, oral contraceptives, corticosteriods, or overusing alcohol or caffeine. These are only some of the evils which deplete our bodies' vitamin and mineral levels. |
As a clinical cardiologist and also a modified vegetarian who consumes large amounts of grains, produce, and herbs, I will continue to take vitamins and minerals and recommend them to my family and patients.
As a layperson and particularly as a young doctor, I never held vitamins or minerals in high esteem. After all, I always felt I ate well, so why should I use supplements, when I consumed grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables? Being a doctor, I thought I knew what was beneficial. But once again, my patients were my best teachers. |
Although the vitamins and minerals found in natural whole foods will give some of us protection against illness, I believe that supplementation enhances our health. It is a little-known fact that certain vitamin and mineral supplements can significantly protect individuals against the increasing dangers of radiation and chemical pollutants. As a clinical cardiologist, I have seen numerous articles on the beneficial effects of beta carotene, vitamins C and E, and selenium. |

Caitlin was also treated with vitamins and minerals to correct nutritional imbalances and given diet therapy. Today, nearly 3 years after starting treatment, Caitlin feels 80% improved. "I can now exercise and I am much more productive at work. I get comments from my friends and family about how much better I look. Ifeel like I have my life back, " she said.
The holistic approach to treating CFIDS is to treat the underlying cause(s) of the illness. This involves treating hormonal imbalances, particularly hypothyroid conditions. |

This could lead to deficiencies of important vitamins and minerals and could also make you feel hungry or ill because you do not have enough glucose (blood sugar) in your body.
As we have said, the main reason high-protein, very low carbohydrate diets can be dangerous is they may cause your body to make ketones that can be harmful. Ketones are produced when your body uses protein instead of carbohydrates for energy. In large amounts, ketones can damage brain cells and cause the minerals in your blood to be unbalanced, which can be life threatening. |

Barley (usually available as "pearl barley") has most of its vitamins and minerals removed during milling. (This grain makes up for its nutrient deficiencies by being extremely easy to digest and adding healthy complex carbohydrate, when mixed in soups and pilafs, to the diets of sick or elderly individuals.)
CAUTION Excessive and exclusive consumption of whole wheat, oats, and protein-rich grains, nuts, and seeds—all of which are plentiful sources of the amino acid arginine—can be hazardous for anyone with herpes or a schizophrenic condition.

Sunflower seeds. These can actually suppress your urge for sweets (as well as cigarettes, by the way). But they won't set you up for heart disease, diabetes, or arteriosclerosis, either—and, given a chance, they'll provide you not only with a way to enjoy more nutritious, and additive-free, foods more often, but, in many cases, to get extra vitamins and minerals as well.

Refined sugar Fruit juice, honey, raisins, fresh fruits (apricots, peaches, seedless grapes, strawberries), a dash of pure maple syrup or blackstrap molasses. |
Whether a cereal has been dutifully enriched with synthetic replacements for lost nutrients or summarily degerminated (stripped of all but the kernel's starchy endosperm, then minimally reimbursed with synthetic substitutes), it is still refined—and capable of shortchanging you of important vitamins and minerals.
Many of these cereals are seductively appealing because they are quick-cooking, "instant" types; all the more reason to scrutinize labels and avoid those that contain disodium phosphate, an additive suspected of causing teeth and bone deterioration and kidney problems. |
Additionally, refined sugars (which presweetened cereals contain) deplete the body of B-complex vitamins, which are necessary for the proper assimilation of other vitamins and minerals.
Despite labels stating how many grams of sugar an ounce contains, few people realize what this figure converts to in teaspoons. An ounce of cereal is not a large portion, but it is considered a serving. And a single serving of a cereal such as Cap'n Crunch, for instance, with half a cup of milk, contains 18 g of sugar—nearly 4 teaspoons! |

Apart from the fact that he wasn't getting a lot of fiber or essential vitamins and minerals, he was also low in EFAs, which come mainly from fish and plant foods.
EFAs in the first place. In addition, supermarket shelves are filled with products that contain processed fats—called hydrogenated fats and trans-fatty acids (TFAs)—which actually interfere with EFA metabolism.
In order to make vegetable fats more stable and less likely to turn rancid, food manufacturers developed hydrogenation, a process that breaks the double bonds in the fatty acid chain and renders a liquid fat more solid. |
But other fats are just as important as vitamins and minerals for good health. These fats, called essential fatty acids, are important cogs in the body's metabolic machinery. Moreover, there's good evidence that they can be used in therapeutic doses to overcome some of our most serious health threats.
Unfortunately, most Americans don't get anywhere near the optimal amounts of essential fatty acids (EFAs). Paradoxically, this is largely due to "advances" that were made in the last century. |
This suggests that the scientific community has begun to realize that EFAs may be just as important for health as vitamins and minerals.
SIGNS OF EFA DEFICIENCY
The various EFAs are involved in dozens, if not hundreds, of the body's vital processes. Over the last century, the amount of EFAs in the diet has steadily declined, mainly because the processing of foods and the high heats used in cooking degrade or destroy them. In addition, conditions such as chronic stress or infections may deplete EFAs or other "helper" chemicals in the body. |
They could be stored through long winters, and they provided protein, energy-dense fats, and a variety of vitamins and minerals.
Scientists have since learned that nuts are rich in EFAs, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They're also one of the few foods that contain large amounts of vitamin E. The combination of EFAs and vitamin E may explain why people

CIGARETTES contribute to hormonal problems by increasing the need for vitamins and minerals to detoxify the poisons in tobacco smoke. This reduces the amount of nutrients available for hormone production.
STRESS is a major contributor to hormonal imbalance. This includes any type of stimuli that requires the body to change and adapt, such as day-to-day hassles, psychological trauma, financial problems, and environmental pollution. Stress can cause hormones to decline, which creates an internal stress, and further diminishes hormonal production. |

Nutritional yeast" has been used as a dietary supplement for generations, as a source of vitamins and minerals and for treatment of digestive complaints. After treating hundreds of yeast-allergic patients, I was very reluctant to prescribe yeast for anyone, until I discovered a preparation the French call "Yeast Against Yeast." The yeasts that invade human tissues, causing yeast infection, are mostly members of the genus Candida. The yeasts used in baking bread or brewing beer belong to the genus Saccharomyees. |

Choose fruit drinks that are 100 percent fruit juice; others do not provide adequate amounts of all vitamins and minerals.
For these reasons we recommend that you take a multiple vitamin supplement when you are trying to lose weight. You may also wish to use a supplement with extra vitamins E and C and take an antioxidant such as grapeseed extract or pinebark extract (pycnogenol) for optimal health benefits. Don't take more than 800 IUs of vitamin E. |

To us, it's also common sense to refuse a double-blind study, since the levels of all the needed vitamins and minerals can be determined in the prospective mothers so that nutrients can be given for the production of better babies.
A double-blind study is eventually analyzed by use of statistical methods, which require homogeneous populations of mice, rats, or people. The schizophrenias are not homogeneous. If a double-blind approach is not appropriate in unclassified diseases from fevers to the schizophrenias, what valid proof of efficiency can be applied? |

Eat whole foods rich in vitamins and minerals. Nutrient deficiencies associated with high cholesterol include vitamin C, the B-complex vitamins (especially B6 and B3), and certain minerals, such as chromium, zinc, and magnesium. Note that taking supplements while continuing to eat a junk-food diet will not address these nutritional deficiencies. A junk-food diet leaves you enzyme-deficient; without enzymes (as are found in whole foods), vitamin and mineral supplemerits cannot be utilized by the body and are therefore wasted. |
In addition, they are often laced with processed sugars or, worse, artificial sweeteners, and contain synthetic vitamins and minerals. Some of these drinks also contain caffeine or herbal forms of caffeine, such as ma huang or ephedra. Anyone can lose weight by reducing caloric intake and hyping themselves up with stimulants, but it is not a healthy approach to the problem and is likely a short-term solution at best.
Over-the-counter diet pills, such as phenylethylamine, should also be avoided. |
To supply these, an organic, whole-foods diet is preferable to taking megadoses of synthetic vitamins and minerals. Such a diet will provide adequate amounts of minerals (including zinc), folic acid, the entire vitamin B complex (including biotin), and the fat-soluble vitamins such as A and E, all of which are important in skin health.

They believe that, when it comes to vitamins and minerals, if some is good, more must be better. Typically these beliefs are not substantiated; often they are voiced by purveyors of food supplements who also promote a myriad of over-the-counter remedies for a wide range of ailments and deficiencies.
Research Evidence to Date
Research has shown that people who are nutritionally deficient benefit from supplements. It is well established that a daily vitamin can compensate for iron deficiency in menstruating women and for poor diets in the frail elderly. |
