Some manufacturers are now producing "insurance" formulas made up of all the needed vitamins and minerals in powder form that can be mixed with juices and the like. And drops are also available for those who can't tolerate pills or capsules.
Gl—Are "timed-release" capsules or tablets worth spending extra money on?
A—No. The idea of getting continuous antioxidant protection is an important one, but you can generally achieve satisfactory results by taking your supplements in divided doses, ideally three times a day, once with each meal. Time-released forms of iron are not reliably absorbed. |
It analyzes all the vitamins and minerals that have any genuine relevance as nutritional supplements. It does the same for the amino acids and many other substances. Each analysis is structured so that you can quickly and easily determine what the nutrient is, what it does—and doesn't—do, who it's good for, what ailments it can help treat or prevent, what amounts it should be taken in, what it should be taken with, what precautions apply and so on. This book provides more consumer guidance than any other currently on the market. |
Certain vitamins and minerals also decrease platelet adhesiveness, especially vitamin E and selenium. There is evidence that supplementary pantethine, at doses of 600 to 1,200 mg daily, decreases platelet stickiness. And let's not forget aspirin. One 325-mg aspirin every other day, or half of one every day, can significantly decrease the adhesiveness of platelets.
Magnesium appears to be very important in the regulation of muscular contraction of blood vessels. |
Note that, with a few exceptions, the vitamins and minerals are not recommended in megadose amounts, that is, in amounts greater than about ten times the U.S. RDA. Exceptions to this arise when vitamins are recommended in higher amounts for specific or therapeutic purposes. I believe that a properly balanced vitamin/mineral supplement usually obviates the need for megadose supplementation. |
Many of the vitamins and minerals are antioxidants that can help protect against cancer, cardiovascular diseases and osteoarthritis, among other ills. A vitamin and mineral supplement is recommended for even healthy individuals as a key element in the prevention of many of these degenerative diseases.
The following "basic formulas" are the ones I recommend for most healthy men, premenopausal women, teenagers and children. The contents and amounts, as well as the recommended forms, are derived from studies reviewed in this book. |
Biotin is available in supplement form either as an individual vitamin or in combination with other vitamins and minerals.
C) Take With: Best taken in a well-balanced vitamin/mineral formula.

V vitamins and minerals. Studies suggest that using nutrition to boost the immune system may prolong the lives of people with AIDS as effectively as some of the drugs used to treat it.
Antioxidants are especially recommended, including vitamins C and E, the vitamin A-like nutrients beta-carotene and lycopene and the mineral selenium. Selenium is plentiful in Brazil nuts, and the others can be found in fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. |
Its leaves are rich in vitamins and minerals plus ellagic acid, a highly touted cancer preventive. Strawberry leaf tea may be of benefit to almost anyone who might be deficient in any vitamins or minerals. One piece of advice, though: Don't drink strawberry leaf tea if you're allergic to strawberries.
V Yarrow (Achillea millefolium). Yarrow is useful for relieving women's painful cramps, according to Commission E. I am not surprised at this endorsement, as yarrow contains a number of antispasmodic constituents. |
In a letter to the British medical journal Lancet some years ago, a British biochemist with MS said that supplemental magnesium by itself worked better for him than all other supplemental vitamins and minerals. He took 375 milligrams a day. (The Daily Value is 400 milligrams.) This is just one man's story—an anecdote—even though it comes from a biochemist and was printed in a respected journal. Still, from my point of view, it means that purslane and other sources of magnesium are worth trying. I know I would try them if I had MS. |

V vitamins and minerals. In my database, vitamin E (tocopherol) is the nutrient most cited for anti-sunburn activity. You might want to try a cream containing vitamin E to soothe sunburned skin.
In addition, one study showed that 1-selenomethionine, a natural amino acid, reduces the skin damage caused by sunburn. The study was done by Karen E. Burke, M.D., of Cabrini Medical Center in New York City. Selenomethionine is effective both applied to the skin and taken orally. Dr. |
Although I prefer to recommend that you get your vitamins and minerals from foods rather than supplements, deficiencies of folate (the naturally occurring form of folic acid) are quite common, and you might need a folic acid supplement. The average American consumes only 61 percent of the Daily Value of 400 micrograms of folate. Whether or not you take a supplement, however, don't neglect good food sources such as spinach, pinto beans, asparagus, broccoli, okra and brussels sprouts.

In addition, many nutritional supplements containing combinations of vitamins and minerals are promoted for bone health. These combination supplements, besides being unproven, are much more expensive than basic calcium carbonate.
As we have said throughout this book, low bone mineral density is not the same as fracture risk. Some studies show that women who eat diets rich in calcium lose less bone and are less likely to fracture. A fourteen-year study of older men and women found that hip fractures occurred less in those whose diets contained moderate amounts of calcium. |

Recommend a high-potency multiple vitamin and mineral formula
It is absolutely essential that patients with IBD take a high-potency multiple vitamin and mineral supplement providing all of the known vitamins and minerals. Table 163.3 lists recommendations for an optimum intake range.
In addition to taking a high-potency multiple vitamin and mineral formula, patients with IBD will need to take additional antioxidants. |
These foods are a rich source of a broad range of vitamins and minerals important to maintaining healthy bones, including calcium, vitamin Ki, and boron.
Vitamin Ka is the form of vitamin K that is found in plants. A function of vitamin that is often overlooked is its role in converting inactive osteocalcin to its active form. Osteocalcin, the major non-collagen protein in bone, anchors calcium molecules into the protein matrix.27
A deficiency of vitamin K leads to impaired mineralization of bone due to inadequate osteocalcin levels. |
Nutritional supplements
For years, it has been the view of many alternative health care providers that the supplementation of vitamins and minerals is beneficial in the prevention and treatment of disease. Although considerable research has supported this view, it is only recently that such groups as the American Medical Association (AMA) have considered the importance of single nutrients in disease. An interesting report sponsored by the AMA summarizes how nutrients such as iron, zinc, B-complex, and vitamins A and C, as well as calcium and magnesium, increase immune function. |

In addition, they utilize megadoses of recognized vitamins such as (emulsified) vitamin A and vitamin C, as well as other vitamins and minerals (e.g., selenium) believed to have anticancer properties.
Enzymes are usually added to this regimen, following the theory of Krebs, Jr. (1970) and Beard (1911) that the pancreatic enzymes—trypsin and chymotrypsin—are intrinsic anticancer factors. To free these enzymes to kill cancer cells, laetrilists advise their patients to eat only small amounts of animal protein. |

In short, the antioxidant benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables go well beyond the antioxidant effects of vitamins and minerals.
Several studies have shown that the risk of RA is highest in people with the lowest levels of nutrient antioxidants (e.g. serum concentrations of alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene, and vitamin C). For example, in one study, persons with rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus that developed 2-15 years after donating blood for a serum bank in 1974 were designated as cases. |

This refined sucrose taxes the body's digestive system and depletes its core of minerals and enzymes as the sugar is metabolized. For this reason and others, white sugar has earned a bad reputation and the label, "empty food."
Carbohydrates include many sugars. The best known is sucrose, or white table sugar, which breaks down in the body into simpler sugars, glucose and fructose. |

Yoga Therapy
WHAT IS IT?
Yoga is an ancient and comprehensive form of spiritual self-discovery. In the broadest sense, yoga practitioners use physical and mental techniques to purify and vitalize the body and mind in order to open them to a type of universal reality. Yoga therapy is the art and science of healing according to yogic principles. It uses specific techniques designed as a form of therapeutic intervention specifically directed at an individual's interrelated systems for balance and harmony.

When Mr. W. recited the li st of foods he ate, and told of his total dislike of vegetables, it was not difficult to diagnose it as scurvy (vitamin C deficiency)...
"Mr. W. was put on practically a fruit and vegetable diet, amplified by a daily quart of milk. He was forbidden to eat meats, breadstuffs and pastry with the exception of three slices of whole wheat bread a day. |

In addition, the avocado has been recommended for inflamed conditions of the mucous membrane, particularly of the small intestines and the colon. The richness of nutrients has apparently made it helpful for cases of male impotency and it is also reported as helpful for cases of constipation, insomnia and nervousness.
Preparation: Avocado is delicious itself as a snack but it can also be prepared in numerous ways. |

This reduces the amount of nutrients available for hormone production. stress is a major contributor to hormonal imbalance. This includes any type of stimuli that requires the body to change and adapt, such as day-to-day hassles, psychological trauma, financial problems, and environmental pollution. Stress can cause hormones to decline, which creates an internal stress, and further diminishes hormonal production. This can interfere with immune function and result in allergies or autoimmune illnesses, such as thyroiditis or lupus. |

Like everything else, abnormal growths of any kind often occur in an environment that is toxic, immunosuppressive, and stressful, both inside and out. Poor diet, lacking in nutrients and excessive in negative influences, contributes greatly to a toxic internal environment. Myriad chemical and pollutant exposures create a poisonous external environment. All of this can stress and burden the liver, whose job it is to process and eliminate all kinds of wastes. Hormonal imbalances can result, since the liver is too preoccupied or tired to manage circulating hormones. |
