It is important to re-nourish the body with the proper form and dosage of vitamins and minerals during cancer treatment, say doctors at the MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute. [Postgraduate Medicine 87: 164-70, 1990]
Do nutrients interfere with or enhance chemotherapy?
The prevailing thought is that antioxidants, herbal ingredients and other dietary supplements interfere with chemotherapy. Chemo and radiation therapy induce free radicals to destroy cancer cells, and antioxidants, by virtue of their ability to prevent free radicals, theoretically could interfere with treatment. |
These include the mineral chelator phytate (IP6) as well as lignans, phytoestrogens and vitamins and minerals. [Proceedings Nutrition Society 62: 129-34, 2003]
Iron, estrogen and breast cancer
While the etiology of breast cancer is linked to high life-time exposure to estrogen, there are disparities in studies that attempt to establish this association. [J Steroid Biochemical Molecular Biology 80: 163-74, 2002] Estrogen alone is not the sole governing factor in breast cancer. |

Recent analyses of nearly a dozen popular diet plans show that none of them provide 100 percent of the RDAs for thirteen vitamins and minerals. What's more, the RDAs are a one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition, and each of us has different requirements. Individual physiology, lifestyle, stress, age, prescription drug use, and physical condition all weigh heavily on our nutritional needs. The RDA is not enough to keep us in optimal health.

The reason is that fat cells serve as a nutrient sinkhole, in which many vitamins and minerals get deposited. When nutrients are stored in fat, they are withheld from other parts of the body, such as the liver, the heart, or the brain.
The Value of Nutrient Testing
Ideally, people should be tested to determine the nutrient levels in their bodies before they take high doses of individual supplements— that is, doses beyond those found in high-potency multivitamins. |
In addition to vitamins and minerals, it contains many vitaminlike substances that can help to maintain normal blood-sugar levels and insulin function.
In addition to a daily high-potency multivitamin, with dosages in the range listed in the following chart, we recommend that you take a separate multimineral supplement. Minerals are much bulkier than vitamins, and it's nearly impossible to get all of the minerals in their recommended amounts into a single tablet or capsule, especially when combined with vitamins. |
Many people have above-average requirements for vitamins and minerals, for reasons relating to genetics or stress, and supplements can help to satisfy these greater needs.
How Should You Start Supplementing?
We recommend that you start with the basics—namely, multivitamin and multimineral supplements—to reduce your risk of having nutrient deficiencies. You should also have clear objectives when you move beyond multivitamins and multiminerals. For example, one might be to reduce your blood-sugar levels. |
Department of Agriculture nutrition data, shows the percentages of Americans who do not obtain the recommended amounts of many vitamins and minerals.
We believe that nutritional supplements are essential for health, especially for people who have prediabetes or weight problems. There are several reasons behind our thinking, which you may want to share with your own physician.
• People who are prediabetic or overweight have a history of eating nutrient-poor foods. (Otherwise, they would not have developed these diseases. |
After all, cranberries are loaded with vitamins and minerals. But on this occasion, Jack neglected to read the list of ingredients. Cranberries are tart, and these dried cranberries contained added sugar to make them sweeter.
The Latin phrase caveat emptor means "Let the buyer beware." You alone are responsible for what you buy and eat. You wouldn't buy a television or a car without reading at least some of the fine print and learning about the warranty. Don't buy any packaged foods (in boxes, cans, jars, bottles, or bags) without reading the fine print on the side or the back of the package. |

This practice also removes vitamins and minerals, which seems to make no difference to their health. Clay is used by many types of folk medicine around the world to absorb the toxins generated by bacteria during diarrhea.
The Aboriginals who live in the wilderness prepare their food similarly to our cooking procedures. Each plant, seed, or root requires a separate process of preparation to make it edible. Certain roots, for instance, are peeled, soaked for half a day, and then baked for thirty minutes. |

Kale, collard greens, romaine, spinach, Swiss chard, and other dark greens are a rich source of vitamins and minerals, including calcium, vitamin K, and boron. As you will learn in the nutritional supplements section, vitamin K is involved in the mineralization of bone, and boron decreases the urinary excretion of calcium and magnesium.
Soy foods appear to also have some role in preventing or slowing bone loss. Soy contains a class of compounds called phytoestrogens. The phytoestrogen especially high in soy foods is isoflavone. |
The quantities and proportions of vitamins and minerals in this supplement either met or exceeded the recommended daily allowances except for calcium and vitamin D. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, 16 of 23 subjects reported feeling better during the cycles in which they took the supplement, and 7 reported feeling better during the placebo cycles.31 These researchers also classified the patients into four different subgroups (PMS-A, PMS-C, PMS-D, PMS-H) and found that only two of the four subgroups responded to this particular supplement. |
The metabolic functions of the liver are involved in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism; the storage of vitamins and minerals; the formation of numerous biochemical factors; and the detoxification or excretion into the bile of hormones such as estrogen as well as histamines, drugs, and pesticides.
The liver not only has to process the foods that we eat every day but also detoxifies harmful substances, both those we produce from normal metabolism and those we are exposed to in our environment. In addition, it metabolizes and deactivates hormones. |

Additional vitamins and minerals. Many other minerals and nutrients affect bone density and are relevant to the prevention of osteoporosis in amenorrheic women. Magnesium, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, vitamin K, vitamin
D, and other nutrients determine bone health, each in their own way. In Chapter 14, I discuss this in detail.

Dandelion is a potent source of vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin A, calcium, potassium, and iron. Mildly diuretic and stimulating to bile flow, dandelion leaf helps with the inevitable digestive complaints of pregnancy, and its root cleanses and tones the liver.117 In early pregnancy, dandelion can help to alleviate nausea, upset stomach, and indigestion. As a diuretic, the most active part of the plant is the leaf. The root or the leaf can be taken as a tea, in capsule form, or as a liquid tincture (a mixture of plant, alcohol, and water). |

Since the former use drugs and the latter vitamins and minerals, it follows that the depressed cancer incidence must be related to the biochemistry of schizophrenia itself. Taken as a whole, the available evidence seems to show that schizophrenics, as well as their siblings and parents, are less susceptible to cancer than the general public. These conclusions appear to be compatible with one or more genetic risk factors for schizophrenia that provide a selective advantage against cancer. |

I invite you to review the discussion of each of these vitamins and minerals in the A-to-Z Nutrient listings to see how many and varied the symptoms occasioned by deficiencies that occur with celiac sprue can be. The treatment is quite straightforward: Totally eliminate gluten from your diet. With elimination, your symptoms will clear. If you eat gluten-containing foods, your symptoms will quickly return. I have included specific dietary recommendations on what foods you must avoid under "What makes it worse?" on page 247, but first let's see what nutrients you may need.

What about the government's recommended daily allowances (RDA) for certain vitamins and minerals? Don't I get everything I need in one bowl of Total cereal? RDAs were established after the introduction of refined white flour led to the discovery of vitamin and mineral deficiency diseases. But vitamin deficiency and vitamin adequacy are very different, just as living out an average life span and thriving for 8o-plus years is not the same thing. My goal for you is not just a long life span, but also a long health span. |

Therefore, the Aloe plant's internal makeup closely relates to human biochemistry and its juice provides many positive health benefits.
Aloe Vera possesses multiple natural qualities for healing and detoxifying the body. When taken internally, Aloe aids the bowel in flushing out accumulated waste and toxic debris. |
Long-term use of products containing psyllium may also negatively affect absorption of certain essential vitamins and minerals such as iron. Perhaps most ironically, obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract has also been regularly cited in studies of patients taking psyllium products. These studies suggest this problem is especially common in constipation-prone individuals.
This brings us to herbal supplements claiming to cleanse the colon. Many of these products are actually just cleverly marketed bulk-forming laxatives!

Pregnancy: Nutritional supplement doses of vitamins and minerals are generally considered safe during pregnancy. Daily dietary Vitamin E requirements are the same during pregnancy (dietary reference intake of 15 milligrams alpha-tocopherol equivalents) as those recommended in nonrepro-ducing adult women (Picciano, 2003). Doses of Vitamin E above the recommended daily allowance should not be used in women during pregnancy. |

To meet the growing demand, the supplement industry has grown to include not only dietary supplements, vitamins and minerals, but also herbal products marketed as natural remedies and natural cures.
Like anything that catches on with the public and has the potential for huge profits, the supplement industry became big business. Hundreds of millions of consumers are buying pills, powders, tonics and other formulas to improve their health. At least that is what they are led to believe. |

On top of all its phytochemical power, cabbage is a darn good source of everyday vitamins and minerals. It contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin K, beta-carotene, and even a little of the eye-healthy carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin. And let's not forget the fiber. One cup of the cooked stuff gives you almost 4 g of fiber (one cup raw gives you 2 g). All this in one of the lowest-calorie foods on the planet. worth knowing
Many members of the cabbage family contain goitrogens, naturally occurring substances that may interfere with the function of the thyroid gland. |
