Heck, even Coca-Cola is coming out with a new product called Diet Coke Plus, which is made with -- get this -- aspartame and supplemental vitamins and minerals. After you stop laughing, consider how powerful the natural health movement must be to get a company like Coca-Cola to try adding minerals to a nutritionally worthless beverage like Diet Coke...)

Department of Agriculture Web site, reflects the percentages of people who do not consume the minimum amounts of vitamins and minerals recommended by the government. Because the government's standards are cautious and conservative, however, there's good reason to believe that the percentages of people with deficiencies are even higher.
Still other factors take a toll on our neuronutrients. Most over-the-counter and prescription drugs either reduce the absorption of nutrients or interfere with how the body uses them, thus increasing the likelihood of multiple vitamin and mineral deficiencies. |

Pizza is made with refined flour (which lacks vitamins and minerals) that's cooked to high temperatures (creating cancer-causing acrylamides), then smothered with tomato sauce made with refined sugar (yes, there's sugar in most pizza sauce), then layered with more processed meat (yet more cancer risk) and processed cheese (can you spell H-E-A-R-T D-I-S-E-A-S-E?). Slapping a few flappy bits of overcooked green peppers and canned mushrooms into this pie does NOT make it a health food.
Geesh. You would think this stuff would be obvious by now. |

However, it is important to note that dietary deficiencies of L-lysine or in any of the vitamins and minerals mentioned will result in inadequate synthesis of L-carnitine. This is why dietary deficiencies of L-carnitine and/or the cofactors for its biosynthesis are extremely important. These cofac-tors must be obtained from the diet.
It's also important to keep in mind that the higher the dietary intake of carnitine, the greater its presence in the tissues. Like coenzyme Q10, dietary supplementation of L-carnitine increases its levels in the blood and tissues. |

Ultimately, it may be better to obtain your fish oils from real fish because you will also ingest vitamins and minerals that can help you metabolize the oil into its potentially neuroprotective components. However, one should be wary of high levels of mercury and other toxins found in some fish populations.

It is recommended that you obtain your n-3 fatty acids from eating foods that contain the vitamins and minerals necessary to metabolize the fatty acids in your body. space of time, consistently associate fish consumption with slower cognitive decline.7
In addition to its alleged neuroprotection, n-3 fatty acids may have vascular benefits by increasing the dilation of veins and arteries, reducing the viscosity of our blood, and lowering the amounts of fats in the bloodstream. |

Organic fruits have much higher concentrations of phytonutrients (natural plant medicines), vitamins and minerals. Organic farming is also better for the environment. But even non-organic superfruits are very good for your health, and in my opinion, the health benefits of the natural fruit juices far outweighs the cancer risk of pesticide residues.
#4: Why do you call apple juice and grape juice "junk juices?"
Many superfruit juice products that claim "pomegranate" or "blueberry" on the front label are actually made mostly with cheaper juices such as grape and apple. |

It is recognized that on our modern high-tech diets any nutrient deficiencies are usually multiple and involve both vitamins and minerals. This is one reason why the B complex preparations have become so popular and also the multi-vitamin and multi-mineral preparations. Almost all the patients treated by naturopathic doctors or orthomolecular therapists are advised to take more than one vitamin, although it is not necessary to give them individual pills containing these nutrients separately. |
The modern diet is a high-sugar, low-fiber, high-fat, high-additive, high-calorie diet, which at the same time is deficient in
48 micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals. Let's consider how each of these factors plays a role in making people sick and the kind of diseases suffered as a result.
High-Sugar Diet
All carbohydrates are broken down or hydrolyzed during digestion into the simple sugars. These simple monosaccharides are then absorbed through the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream. This sugar provides energy for all the cells of the body. |
Liver Extract
Liver extract is a potent source of vitamins and minerals and other important physiological factors. Liver extract provides the most absorbable form of iron, known as heme iron. Heme iron is effectively absorbed, even in a stomach that has low stomach acid. In other words, the lack of acid does not interfere with the utilization of the heme iron from the liver extract. Liver extract also contains crucial B vitamins, such as folic acid, vitamin B-2, and vitamin B-12.
We often recommend liver extract for various reasons. |
The liver's metabolic functions include carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism; the storage of vitamins and minerals; the formation of vital physiologic factors; and the detoxification of foreign or endogenous chemical compounds.
Dosage
The best type of liver extract are hydrolyzed (water is added to it) and are known as "liquid liver extracts." Make sure that at least 3 to 4 mg of heme iron is provided per capsule of the liver extract. The typical of dose iron prescribed is 1 to 2 capsules, three times daily with meals. |

By my calculations, if a human being were to eat healthy foods from the grocery store in an attempt to get the quantities of vitamins and minerals necessary for optimum human health, they would have to consume about 10,000 calories a day.
It is virtually impossible for any human being to consume 10,000 calories a day if they're eating whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and minimally processed foods. You're stomach simply isn't big enough. You're digestive tract doesn't have the capacity to process 10,000 calories worth of whole, unprocessed foods on a daily basis. |

The only way to do that is to eat superfoods, nutritional supplements, take lots of vitamins and minerals, and avoid depleting those substances by refusing to ingest foods and beverages that actually strip your body of nutrition. Those include white flour, added sugars, soft drinks, and so on.
At the same time, you have to keep in mind what level of exercise you are subjecting yourself to. There's no doubting that physical exercise can be quite strenuous on the human body. This is especially true if you engage in strength training. |

They simply don't get the vitamins and minerals that their nervous systems need to fully develop and function in a healthy way.
So what's the solution here? It's easy. Nutritional supplements should be made available free of charge to the entire population. The government (the taxpayers, actually) should provide free vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients to the population, especially pregnant women and children, so that we can prevent birth defects and behavioral disorders early on. We would save countless dollars down the road. |

A number of different vitamins and minerals in addition to calcium play a role in maintaining healthy bones, but, unfortunately, Americans often consume inadequate amounts of these nutrients. Additionally, hormone therapy may be more effective when ovarian hormones other than estrogen are taken into consideration.

Calcium: Calcium has been known for its ability to impact bone formation positively. Now, evidence suggests it also slows down bone resorption. |

Because that's what you can do with simple vitamins and minerals. Zinc alone, if given to expectant mothers, can reduce the incidence of low birth weight infants by nearly one third. Vitamin D supplementation can prevent prostate cancer, breast cancer, osteoporosis and many other disorders. And magnesium, of course, can greatly improve cardiovascular health and actually help prevent heart attacks. And we haven't even talked about the healthy oils and how supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids or macadamia nut oil can greatly enhance cardiovascular health while improving nervous system function. |

Another point worth mentioning here is that the national food supply doesn't offer consumers sufficient quantities of these vitamins and minerals. There's a great myth out there – one frequently promoted by conventionally trained medical doctors – that says you get all the nutrition you need from eating three balanced meals a day. But this is nothing more than a myth. "Three balanced meals a day" is meaningless because a lot of people think that one breakfast at Denny's, lunch at McDonald's and dinner at home with macaroni and cheese is "balanced". And that's absurd. |

Impaired Secretion of Hydrochloric Acid and Pepsin
As we grow older, or with certain diseases, the stomach's capacity to secrete hydrochloric acid becomes impaired, resulting in decreased absorption of amino acids (the breakdown products of protein) and certain vitamins and minerals. This impaired secretion of hydrochloric acid and pepsin is called hypochlorhydria. Hypochlorhydria is probably the most common weakness in the digestive system, and it is frequently associated with the various medical conditions listed previously. |

Supplementing with appropriate vitamins and minerals may therefore be of value in the treatment of diabetes.
Dietary Considerations
Basic measures that individuals can take to control diabetes include maintaining ideal body weight, exercising regularly, and avoiding refined sugars and caffeine. For many diabetics, blood sugar can be controlled to a large extent by consuming more foods that contain complex carbohydrates and fiber, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Legumes (beans) are especially important for diabetics. |

But to achieve optimum human health, you need far higher quantities of many vitamins and minerals. And it is those far higher numbers that I am considering in this analysis.
Adequate nutrition is impossible to achieve from eating grocery store foods
The bottom line is that you simply can't get adequate nutrition by going to a grocery store, loading up on healthy foods and chewing your way through them on a daily basis. Nobody can. Given the nutritional profile of today's foods, it's physically impossible for a human being to do so. |

In addition to enzymes, many vitamins and minerals act as antioxidants in their own right, such as vitamin C (page 604), vitamin E (page 609), beta-carotene (page 469), lutein (page 548), lycopene (page 548), vitamin B2 (page 598), coenzyme Qio (page 496), and cysteine (page 502) (an amino acid). Herbs, such as bilberry (page 634), turmeric (page 753) (curcumin), grape seed or pine bark extracts, and ginkgo (page 681) can also provide powerful antioxidant protection for the body. |

When You Run Short of Coenzyme Q10
We don't have the kind of deficiency information for CoQ10 that we have for vitamins and minerals. Thus, we can't say that when you run a little short of CoQ10 you'll have certain symptoms, and when you run significantly short you'll develop a particular deficiency disease.
We can, however, look at studies of people who were given supplemental CoQ10. The most definitive studies have been done with people suffering from heart disease, and many of these have shown that this substance is very much linked to heart health. |
